Hello,
Can anyone think of some good books about the Academies? I read The Return of Philo T. McGiffin, and am reading Absolutely American. Any suggestions that I and other applicants would enjoy?

Good question. I've also been looking for good reading material on the academies. I checked out Amazon.com for my book hunt and found some ones I plan on obtaining. Plus, most all of the Amazon search results have reviews which help you to find the right book. I think someone compiled & posted a must-read book list in a thread awhile back, maybe it was Navgirl...but I'm not sure.

Duty First (West Point)

Brief Points (USNA)

The Long Gray Line (West Point)

A Candidate's Guide to (USMA/USNA....) - has some detailed info about what it's like at the academies.

There is also a great video series "Surviving West Point" made by National Geographic...the library usually has it. It is 4 tapes long and was made for TV. Appropriate for anyone looking at Academy life it shows the up's and downs of several candidates and is filmed over a year and during 9/11. We saw it twice and it really makes for good conversation about the highs and lows of life at an Academy!

Also one done by the Discovery Channel but we have not been able to get it here... We borrowed one...

A Sense of Honor is another great one.

Happy Holidays to everyone and good luck on your endeavor to attain an appointment.

"Darkside" if you like mysteries, or are female.

The Naval Academy Candidate Book answered many of our questions and was extremely helpful. Another excellent source of information is How to Win ROTC Scholarships by Chuck Brewer. The book is extremely well written, and the appendix in the ROTC book is particularly helpful because it has an application checklist and an extensive list of ROTC programs separated by branch of service, i.e., Army, Navy, Air Force. "Surviving West Point," the National Geographic DVD is fascinating to watch and a must-see for all candidates. David Lipsky's book, Absolutely American, is pretty interesting too.

take a look at the book "A Sense of Honor" by James Webb who was Secretary of the Navy in the late 80's. A guy I knew who graduated from the Naval Academy recommended it to me, saying it was the most accurate depiction of life at the academy he's ever read.

"A Sense of Honor" is a great book!

it is a great book... its a little tedious for the first 40 pages or so, but once you get through that you are golden

I read Darkside and I just started Duty First
