Boost Your Application

I was wondering what types of extracurriculars look good on college applications. For example, I traveled abroad the summer before sophomore year to Australia with People to People. What other things look nice or what organizations can I join?

Looking is usually quicker than asking… here’s a sticky thread chock full of information on ECs.

Travel with People to People doesn’t really “look nice” on an application; it’s the equivalent of a pricey summer vacation to adcoms. If you enjoyed it, that’s great, but don’t believe them if they say it will give you an edge.

“What other things look nice or what organizations can I join?”

Something wrong with this picture? Selective colleges want people who really can ADD to their communities, not game out what “looks good”. Maybe you should ask some trusted elders what are ways you can enhance your intellectual curiosity, community involvement or empathy to needs in your locale?

There are plenty of “fakers” – avoid if at all possible.

What types of extracurriculars look good? There’s a simple answer to this question: whatever you are passionate and dedicated in. If you pursue what you truly love to do, you may not end up at Harvard, but you sure as hell will be at a place you love doing something that is intensely interesting to you.
