Boost your sat writing score with my tips

I got -3 on my jan sat so i want to help out. i have a few common CB tricks and i want to point them out. These are some common sentence errors.

Jack and James are both very good golfers, but he is the better one.

he is wrong. It is ambiguous and is an error. He can refer to either Jack or James.

Of the three plants, the blue violet was the more beautiful.

More is wrong. More is used when comparing 2 things, when 3 or more things are compared it is MOST.

Of the two composers, Mozart was the more prolific.

More is correct here since it is 2 things being compared.

Among the two girls was a lot of tension.

Among is wrong. It is used for comparing three or more things. BETWEEN is correct. it is used when 2 things are involved.

The horde of bugs are very dangerous.

ARE is wrong. Horde is singular, so use IS instead of are.

Janice was not only smart, but cool aswell.

But is the error. It is an idiom. Whenever the words not only are shown, the words but also must be shown.

John was either an idiot or a genius.

If you didn’t know what an idiom was this is an example. Either… or is an idiom. Once you see the word either, or must follow it.

still don’t get it?

Shelly was neither naive nor stupid.

Neither… nor is an idiom. Once you see neither it must be followed by nor.

The company is very large; they are composed of thousands of people.

They is wrong. the company is singular like horde, and therefore should be followed by IT. So instead of they there should be it.

This is Gandhi, the writing kid. I want to help you own the SAT writing as it is the easiest section to improve on. i went from 450 to 700+ in January.

And i shall help you too. I will make more writing posts as long as I don’t get banned for doing so.

I am sure many CC'ers will appreciate this, but...

I got -0.

How? By Learning the 7 deadly writing sins from spark notes and grinding BB writing questions. I understand you're trying to help but it's quite frankly a utter waste of time given the myriad sources-free sources-with much, much more comprehensive lessons on SAT writing.

^ lol couldn't agree more.

Zenbadabing, i got 80 by knowing how to read.

but OP: good tips! fairly comprehensive list; definitely covers lots of stuff they throw at you.

just bumping this. it is important.

thnx poseur.

antimmy and zenba.

you both got 800's on the sat writing. why would you expect this to help you? this is for others who need it.....

I need to improve my score from 620 to 760 .Do you think it is possible ?

thanks for posting this. I am an international student , and every little information helps. I have taken the sats twice and can't pass 500. I would appreciate if you can tell me which books are the best practice for the sat.

I'm actually using this list to study from. It helped me on my practice tests. Hamilton College - Seven Sins of Writing - Seven Deadly Sins of Writing

Of course it is possible, i jumped a lot just by doing practice. A 700 in writing is teh easiest to get out of math and reading. WHy? because you can study for it. I will make more posts. I have an essay packet that will help you master the sat essay.ask me for it.

Lol your like me, I got a 48 on my PSAT but a 750 on the SAT writing section.

CR7... i got my writing score from 610 to 770.. so yes.. it is.
And yeah flipper i got a 47 on my writing PSAT lol

Essay examples would be helpful though.

Man, this reminds me of how much I hate prescriptive grammar since I took linguistics courses. If you ask me, from a practical standpoint, 1 and 9 are the only ones with serious problems. 2 is technically wrong, but the meaning still comes through (and it would be correct in some other languages). 4 might be technically wrong, but that's getting pretty picky. 5 would (I think?) be correct in British usage, since "horde" is a collective noun. 6 is really, really nitpicky.

It doesn't- I am simply telling you that a more productive way of utilizing your time would be to provide links to FREE writing tips that are much more reliable and comprehensive.

Unless you enjoy dawdling away your time...

But that's just weird.

^ dude if you do not like it leave. I am not forcing you to read this; I am trying to help others who didn't get 800's.....

Thanks for this. It's a good review.

no problemo.

6. Janice was not only smart, but cool aswell.

But is the error. It is an idiom. Whenever the words not only are shown, the words but also must be shown.

Are you sure about that? My gut says it's fine, and my gut knows its stuff. Doesn't the 'aswell' replace the need for the 'also'?

no it is an idiom. not only... but also. 0 exceptions. your gut is wrong, this is fact.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that it's not an idiom. An idiom is something like 'kick the bucket' which cannot be understood by its literal meaning, only by the way its commonly used.
