@csuozzo23:
I’ll definitely share how the appeal goes, hopefully it ends up in a little more aid. Unfortunately, I’m going to be out of the country for the next week and I am not sure I will have internet access so it may be a little while before I get back to the thread.

So when i got my financial aid package, I knew with what was originally offered I would not be able to attend.
While I was away, my father sent in some extra/updated paperwork and filed an appeal on my behalf and I am pleased to say Boston College was very understanding and willing to work with me. They did increase their scholarship to a level that now I can at least consider BC. I would still be taking out loans but now the amount may not be crippling. So, if anyone is uncomfortable with their financial aid I would definitely recommend calling the school, contacting your financial aid rep, because I was pleasantly surprised to find that the school was incredibly understanding and willing to help out. They dont want their graduates to be crushed by a mountain of debt so if you have a legitimate need, my guess is they will help you also.

@transfer200 Wow that is great! If you don’t mind me asking, how much aid did you receive?

My BC Scholarship (not counting loans of any sort) covers about 50% of all expenses. So with BC costing about 60,000K a year I would be paying just under 30K. Although a scholarship that large sounds amazing, and it is very generous, I still am not sure If I will be going to BC. I do have a much cheaper option, albeit a much lower ranked option I am not nearly as excited about.
I know a degree from BC will carry more weight than the other school I was accepted to. I guess I have to decide if it is worth 60K for two years (while my other option would be about 20K)

Wow that is a pretty nice scholarship! But you are right; in the context of how expensive BC is, there would still be huge price to pay afterwards. Have you considered living off campus? That is usually less expensive than the dorms. I wish you the best of luck with your decision-making process because that is tough!!! I love BC and would have such a hard time turning it down, but I think I would have an even harder time trying to reconcile getting into so much debt for a degree that I could get somewhere else for much cheaper. That’s why I turned down my dream school of UMiami. I’m starting to lose hope now. If I do end up getting accepted to BC off of the wait-list I would get to live with family for free, which cuts out the costs of room and board, etc., but it would still be so expensive! What do your parents think? Do they want you to go to BC?

Also, what is your major? If you are doing business in CSOM, then I could see spending the money for BC because that is the kind of degree that will get you very far. Unfortunately in the business world, prestige seems to be more important than in other fields so it might be worth it for that. On the other hand, don’t get into 60K debt for an English degree.

I’m a political science major, definitely have aspirations of going to grad school so that also makes me worry about the debt.

Yeah grad school is another expense you have to worry about. Idk, tough call. Good luck.

Thanks miami4rmjax, I am truly torn on my decision at the moment.

Understandable. Let us know what you end up deciding!

@transfer200 you are literally in the same boat as me. My aid was a little bit less even after having them reevaluating me and receiving another 3700. I would have to pay about 60%. And even though it is only 2 years it still is a lot of money. I am convinced that having a degrees from CSOM at BC is something worth it but its my dad who is more worried about me having that much debt. My other option is the College of New Jersey. One of the best state schools in NJ but not nearly as good as BC.

^^ I know what you mean. Personally my dad would NEVER allow me to get into so much debt. He would refuse to co-sign any loans or support me financially in any way. However, I don’t think that’s fair because it’s our lives, not our parents. Shouldn’t we get to make our own decisions?

@csuozzo, my other option is Hofstra University which for me is local. It is not close to BC in terms of prestige and I want to go away to college badly so this is my chance.
My parents also are incredibly worried about the money, especially since the loans will be pretty much in my name. With my family’s financial situation I do not think my parents can even cosign my loans so I am 100% responsible (which means a slightly higher interest rate). It is a scary thought being that much in debt without the guarantee of a job, but I suppose you have to take chances in life…hopefully a degree from BC pays that off.
I’m leaning towards attending but I still have a lot to sort through before I send in a deposit

@transfer200 You seem very thoughtful and genuine in your love for BC. I really hope you get to go!

Did you guys hear that P.Diddy’s (who is worth $500 million aka half a billion) son got a $54K merit scholarship to UCLA? I’m sorry, but that infuriates me. First of all, UCLA is public so their funds are already limited. They are going to waste their money to give a full ride to a guy who’s dad could pay tuition for half the entire student body already? And here we are, with parents that don’t even make a fraction of that money and WE have to go into debt! Life is so cruel sometimes…

Anyone know what the waitlist is like at BC?

@miami4rmjax, thank you for the kind words; BC has been a lifelong dream for me so my desire to attend is genuine and I think demonstrating that in my essay was the main reason I was re-admitted.
And I almost drove my car off the road this morning when I heard that story. Nothing against him, he probably does deserve the scholarship, but it really hurts when a dream like going to BC may be out of reach because my family essentially has to live paycheck to paycheck while a kid born into incredible wealth does not have to think twice about attending (even if he was not given a dime by UCLA)

@miami4rmjax- it’s a football scholarship.

A while back I noticed everyone was posting the time that they received their admissions decision. Is there any significance to the time the email was received?
