Boston College Academics

Hi guys, I’m an upcoming Senior in high school in the Fall. And I would like to know if the academics/courses in Boston College are challenging, difficult to get an A, or are they averaged, which if you study, As will come out of the pocket?
Is the school hard to graduate from?

very hard but do-able if you go to class, pay attention, and study accordingly, etc etc. like most other colleges you are going to have to work for it (i mean it’s boston college lol…) but you will be fine as long as you work hard

It depends a lot on how smart you are, and in what ways you’re smart. And naturally what classes you take.

In general, if you work hard, an A is within your reach. Occasionally, even if you don’t work hard, an A is still within reach. Very rarely, that A is just so high up in the stratosphere that you’re screwed. I don’t find the classes much harder than high school, though they cover a lot more material and therefore require more discipline. Language classes (of which I took two different ones) are way harder than high school ones though, just as a head’s up. If you decide to take Spanish II or whatever, it will NOT be an easy class.

It depends on what you are majoring in. The sciences are naturally more challenging. The average grade for a physics class I took on a whim was a 47 (God bless P/F). Sub-60 average is pretty common in the sciences. Humanities are easier. The social sciences are a more difficult, especially econ and political science. Of course you can have the easiest class in the world, the greatest professor there is, and still flunk. It’s all about time management in college. Many people I know who were workaholics in high school suddenly decided to chill for four years. Apparently getting into college was the end of the journey for them. You will have a lot of free time in college and some people couldn’t handle all that freedom.

Thanks so much guys, all of you.

Anybody else? Any other information is appreciated, thanks.

If you have the ability, study hard, go to class, and work at it, you should get As. As are not typically easy even if you have a natural talent (always an exception here and there). The student body, in the most part, were tops of their high school classes. So there are few poor students to raise your grade. If you have two notoriously difficult science classes (like sometimes bio-chem focused students have) you probably won’t have a life if you want As, unless you are gifted.

Thanks man. So basically few of the courses are difficult unless you put assiduous effort into them. But if one works hard, study, and go to class, an A is likely possible.

Uhm… Anybody knows about the graduation retention rate?.. like is the school hard to graduate from or what percentage of students graduate on-time?

the graduation rate for BC hovers around 90% I believe every year, give or take a few percentage points. look in the 2008-2009 factbook on BC’s website for more in depth info.

^ So about 10% of them don’t graduate in four years right?

I’d prefer you or someone else paste me that info from the bc link just in case I do not find it well.

According to U.S. News, BC ranks in the top 30 in the country at approx. 95.5% retention. (Source: [Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/college/national-freshmen-least-most-likely-return))

Also, according to the nytimes.com, the graduation rate at Boston College is approx. 95%. (Source: [Boston College News - The New York Times](<a href=“Times Topics - The New York Times”>Times Topics - The New York Times))

I could not find any information on the percentage of students who graduate in 4 vs 5 years, however I feel most students are able to do it in 4.

Thanks man.

All these things clears up more than half of the information about BC.

Thank you so much, everyone!
Hope you all have fun for the rest of the Summer!~
