Boston College Class of 2025 -- Regular Decision

Rumor on campus in my days was that after Gabelli, athletes, and nursing the top 10% of the class received 4 years of housing. Not sure how true that is…

This is interesting – my son is also none of the above and received 4 years.

How would you know if he’s not in the top 10 percent of applicants? Only the admissions office would define that.

I’m skeptical my son was in the “top 10%” of applicants (other than BC and Oberlin all of the schools he applied to are very selective and he’s pretty much waitlisted (Georgetown, Vanderbilt, WashU, Cal etc.) or rejected (Northwestern, Pomona etc.) at all of them (other than UCLA! Lucked in there, in state). But he also was offered 4 years. So honestly maybe it’s a little random! In any case it sounds like living off campus is pretty standard and fun that third year.

Yes, my daughter did.

My daughter received 4 years. No merit. Not an athlete. Admitted to the Arts and Science.

Hi my daughter was accepted ED 2also , , do you know about when we need to register for housing ?

Congrats! Housing registration opened on April 1 and will continue until July.

same, I got four years:

“As a member of our residential campus, please note that you have been assigned four years of campus housing.”

Housing registration is open already? Are freshmen who deposit early get preference for staying in the better dorms?

Yeah, but only if you commit I guess (I’m not committed). I’m going to guess that those who deposit early will have better options, but I’m also not sure if BC just waits until after the reply deadline to look at housing requests

All the freshman dorms are pretty much the same between Upper and Newton.

No, they don’t figure out freshman housing until late July, maybe even early Aug. I don’t believe there’s any advantage to registering sooner. Unless one of the learning communities are involved (can’t even remember what they’re called), I don’t think there’s much of a housing preference that you can possibly indicate, besides a roommate if you already have one planned. I don’t think you can request Newton vs Upper, for example, or a specific dorm. (Exceptions for medical, etc)

There is no advantage to placing an early deposit when it comes to housing. First year housing assignments on Upper and Newton are completely random - unless you apply for the living/learning community housing which is exclusively on Upper Campus.

Finally sat down to put together a spreadsheet to compare FA packages. Is it my imagination, or does BC have quite a few extra fees that I don’t see at other colleges? Also, the cost of one’s room fee varies and seems to be based upon how selective/ posh/ desirable the dorm is, unless I’m missing something.

The newer dorms do cost more money. However, those are usually for sophomores and above. There are no new freshman dorms. Same ones that have been there for years.

What are the extra cost that you’ve found besides the dorms?

According to their website, here are some of the fees that may apply to incoming students:

Freshman Orientation fee: 200.00
ID Card Initial Fee: 45.00
ID Card Replacement Fee: 30.00 (which I can understand)
Campus Health Infirmary Fee: 550.00
Lab/ Course Fees: 55.00-365.00 Per Course/ Per Semester
Undergraduate Activity Fee: 626.00/ year

Unless my son didn’t forward all the pages of his FA package, I didn’t see books/ personal expenses factored into the cost of attendance, which would also increase the total yearly price of BC.

I have paid those same fees for my son at another university. The health fee I was able to waive since he is covered under our families policy for now. I will have to check into this for BC. Thank you for pointing those out.

Carroll is the finest finance program of the three. At least in subjective rankings ans peronal observation. Other categories it switches to the others. No wrong decision in that did choices. Although ND and BCare by far nicer campuses and dorms. Newer facilities being built as well.

Georgetown has its niches where it is unriveled too.

So I would choose lifestyle and setting. Which could be any of the three.
