Boston College EA 2021 Thread

@londondad Wait so is Boston College Restrictive Early Action??? Oh god I had no idea. Not once has common app notified me that this is restrictive. If I had known of course I wouldn’t apply to BC since Cornell is by far my first choice. Also, there would be no reason to apply EA since EA is much harder to get in than with regular decision.

@BigPapiofthree Since I got deferred from Cornell am I still on the hot seat? Or am I just like any other applicant now? Do you think BC will rescind my app even thought I got Honors College with 4 year housing??

@collegemomjam Nope. I am not Questbridge. Common app let me apply to both and no-one told me that BC was restrictive, so I applied to both. Although I guess I should have taken the initiative to actually check BC’s early action policies on their website…

@vcq7890 You should have checked out each school’s website. This is on BC’s website displayed prominantly:

“A student applying to a binding Early Decision program may not apply Early Action to Boston College.”

Therefore, what you did was wrong. You need to contact BC asap and tell them what happened.

@londondad Ok I will call them. Are they only open on weekdays?

I am applying to a ton of schools, and BC was not on my reach list, so I did not put too much effort into my app. Therefore I did not bother checking the policies on BC’s website. I’m sorry, but I am not going to look through every college’s website for policy. If they truly wanted it enforced, common app shouldn’t have let me apply to both. For instance, common app prevents me from applying to two ED schools, so why wouldn’t they do the same for EA? Yes I am feeling awful about not checking, but at the same time I am annoyed with my counselor for not giving me the information.

PM me if you want to join an accepted students group chat! I’m finding it hard to keep up with all the FB messages on the accepted students page lol…

@SugarSmarts how do you PM somebody?

@vcq7890 while I do think the responsibility of understanding each of the schools’ respective policies lies with the student and agree you need to come clean with all of your EA schools, I do agree that common app should have something that would catch you if you are violating a school’s policy (whether it be unintentionally, or intentionally). Doesn’t seem like it should be that hard to do. But, if you are asking a school to review your application, you owe it to the school to understand their application policies and restrictions in fairness to the other applicants.

Not a good attitude for a Jesuit school, Papi. (Just bcos the Common App allows it, doesn’t make it right.)

Xaviermom: search cc for threads by scottj, who has some excellent ideas on how to craft a ‘Why BC?’ essay.

My source was a call to the admission office. Spoke with the counselor on duty. Is it a good attitude of a jesuit school to limit students so they can potentially increase yield and manipulate rankings. It works both ways…moving on

It would actually decrease yield. It would also make it more difficult for BC regarding the selection of the Presidential Scholars since said candidates are chosen from the early action pool…

Accepted to MCAS Honors!
35 ACT, 4.0 UW, 4.32 W

@vcq7890 Yes, they are only open Monday through Friday. I know that you made an honest mistake and I agree with you that it can be difficult sometimes as you have to first check the ED’s schools requirements and then cross-check against your EA schools.

@1zogden1 that is inspiring news! Great job! Congratulations on your acceptance to BC and a great SAT score! Is BC your final choice, did you apply ED?

@xaviermom2017 BC was one of my five EA schools. My original number 1 was Georgetown but I got deferred which I am in a way glad it happened because it gave me the opportunity to push aside Georgetown and really look into BC and now I realize how great BC and now I like it more than Georgetown despite it being a “better” school. I still have some decisions to come in but I can say with near certainty that BC is the place I want to be. I hope your daughter will take the time to learn how great BC is in all aspects.

@1zogden1 she is already totally in love with BC - from the minute she stepped onto the the campus. It is a reach school for her but definitely sits way on top of her list!! For what it’s worth, I wasn’t thrilled with Georgetown when I visited this summer. Although I love DC and the little downtown Georgetown, I wasn’t as impressed with the University as I thought I would be. My opinion is that BC is a much nicer campus for undergrad and Georgetown is a better option for grad school. Just a thought! Good luck whatever you choose!!

@bluebayou thanks! Will do!

any news on when the Gabelli Presidential Scholars Program info come out?

How do we know if we are in the Honors program for BC?

Honors would have been mentioned in your letter of acceptance. I think Gabelli would be in the hard copy that is coming hopefully this week, but not sure. Doesn’t seen like anyone has heard about Gabelli yet, but people in honors have heard.

A little late but just wanted to post:
