Boston College EA 2021 Thread

Those who are accepted, let’s get to know each other!! I feel awkward starting it but we should chat in the facebook group!

Ok so here is my dilemma. I got deferred from BC. Now I want to apply to Bucknell Early Decision II. But I hear back from them Feb. 15 whereas I won’t hear back from BC until middle of March probably. Is anyone in the same situation? Idk what to do now.

@collegemomjam Thanks. My
daughter wants to avoid schools where all the kids move off campus sophomore/jr year, so BC looks like a good fit for her.

@londondad Yes, BC is the type of school that the housing situation gets better every year. Feel free to private message me anything about BC…between being an alum and having a current student there, we might be able to help you through the decision making process. It’s really a very, very special place!

@collegemomjam my daughter (junior HS) is absolutely IN LOVE with BC. It is her dream school. She is interested in med. school. She is a good student but not necessarily the top ranked kid in her private all girls Catholic school in CT. She is a very well-rounded kid, Mock Trial, Latin Honor Society, Volunteer, Sports, AP classes and Honors courses - all of which seem “average” at best for the students I see applying on these Boards. Do you have any suggestions as to how to make this dream become a reality? I know SATs/ACTs will be huge. Being an alum with a kid there now - is there anything we can do to express her interest early on or is it just plain useless? We have no ties to the school at all. She isn’t a first generation - I have a JD. Currently, I am a Prof. in Res. at a CT Univ. I know interest plays a part in our admissions process but I’m getting the sense that BC doesn’t take interest into consideration. I would love to hear any words of wisdom! :slight_smile: Thanks!

so I saw an earlier post that said Boston College gives 4-year housing to the top 15% of applicants and a few other people like athletes and such. I was wondering, how does BC determine who the top 15% are? Also what is the acceptance rate the the Boston Honors College?

@vcq7890 The Honors Program accepts the top 5% of applicants to their respected schools (MCAS, Lynch, CSOM). And they really value well rounded kids. Not sure how they determine the next 10% (I asked a college rep this question 2 years ago) but they were not very helpful. :stuck_out_tongue: Said they look at everything from the essay to scores.

@crazylegs12 thanks for the info. lol I guess that makes me a little happier since I got deferred from Cornell…

@xaviermom2017 I’m happy to try to give you some advice, for what it’s worth. BC’s official stance is that they do NOT track demonstrated interest. With that said, I have found BC to be amongst the most responsive admissions counselors out there, so I think getting in touch with her specific admissions counselor to get on his/her radar can certainly not HURT. She might want to schedule the Eagle for a Day for the spring (juniors are allowed to do this in the spring) and then maybe email her rep to let him/her know how much she loved the visit, her host, and the classes she attended (assuming she does!).

Sitting in on a class (try to get a sciencey/pre-med class? they try to match you) might also give her some meat for an essay. If she chooses an essay that allows her to incorporate her visit somehow, that might really make her stand out. It might only have to be a sentence or two, but when they are reading her app, I would think if they see that she has gone to the extreme of attending a real class, maybe that will sway them a bit, especially if she is on the fence.

BC does look at applications holistically and I think they are very fair. However, I have noticed that without the scores and GPA, it is very tough to get in. I’m not sure what your daughters scores and GPA are (and class standing if you have an idea), but if she is hookless which it sounds like she is, I would say if she is not in the upper half, it’s going to be difficult.

It sounds like your daughter is a hard worker. So if this is her dream school, she still has control over her GPA and scores. Daunting as it sounds, have her buckle down and study as hard as possible for the SAT or ACT. Have her do what she can to get the best grades possible. An impressive junior year could really help her application.

A girl applying science might be a good thing…I’m almost thinking you should NOT put pre-med down. Put Bio or chemistry…might be a bit easier to get in (they want women in science, but Pre-Med could be more rigorous and they may be harder on her). But before you do this, please call admissions and ask them if a student comes in as a Bio major, for example, can they designate “pre-med” later, or do they have to be pre-approved before they are accepted/matriculated?

I’m also going to private message you if I can figure out how to do that.

@vcq7890 how did you apply ED to Cornell and EA to Boston College? Is this common at your school, to apply both ED and EA?

@Crusoemom yes it is fairly common. As long as it is not restrictive early action then you are allowed to apply to multiple schools. Also, early decision does not stop you from applying to other schools, but if you get in then you just have to rescind your application. I applied EA to a few other schools as well.

@vcq7890, BC’s policy as per its website: “Applicants may not apply to another school Early Decision; however, they may apply to other programs as Early Action as permitted by the other schools they are considering.”

@vcq7890 are you questbridge? sometimes there are exceptions, maybe you had one.

It is true that BC states that you can not apply to another school ED. However, that position is merely a suggestion, and is neither binding, nor enforceable. The common app allows you to apply ED to a school and EA to BC. The system allows it. Schools lead applicants to do what is good for them, not what is good for the student. Since you do not sign an agreement, they don’t/nor can’t enforce the request. The Common app system prevents you from applying to two schools ED1. In a quiet private moment, BC will not deny this fact. They just keep publicly proclaiming what is written, and everyone believes it. Kind of like fake news stories on Facebook…Just saying…

@collegemomjam I am thankful for your advice. I’m pretty sure she is top half of class, GPA is upper 3s unweighted I’m sure with all honors and AP. PSATs not sooo great - coming in around 1150 or a bit higher if I recall - just got them back. Her math score way higher than Eng. She is working on that now. She is a junior honors pre-calc with AP Physics and honors Latin so her test scores should be up there for the SAT/ACT. I know she needs at least a 1300 on SAT to even be on radar for most of the schools she is considering at this point. She is self-studying and taking it seriously. I’m pretty sure she can pull her SAT up. Until we see her March scores we really don’t know if it’s a real possibility. We are holding tight on those :slight_smile: I will keep in touch with you though. Does BC require subject tests??? I can look on the website I guess and I will also pass the visit idea along to her. I’m sure she will do it if her test scores come in above the 1300 mark. Fingers crossed for some good luck on the standardized!

@xaviermom2017 Let her know that it definitely is possible to increase test scores by a substantial amount, but it is not just going to happen by itself. I got an equivalent of an 1120 on my sophomore PSAT but was able to bring that to a 1460, and I was fortunate to be admitted to BC a couple days ago. Tell her that it is going to take a lot of work, but make sure that it does not take away from the High School experience.

@BigPapiofthree

Can you point us to the source of this statement?

What does “neither binding nor enforceable” mean when they decide to rescind your acceptance?

Many schools take their EA/ED application guidelines seriously and will rescind your acceptance in a heartbeat the moment they hear you violated them. This is the first I’ve ever heard that BC doesn’t take it seriously.

@vcq7890 So, you obviously violated the BC EA policy but were accepted to BC anyway?
