Boston College Honors Program v. UMichigan v. UMass Amherst Honors Program

I'm deciding between BC, UMichigan, and UMass Amherst. If anyone could help me with my decision, that would be great. I live in MA just north of Boston.

Major- undecided, maybe pre-med, maybe finance but applied as some version of an the arts & science college for each school

Financial Situation - don't have too much money but parents willing to pay

Plans after college - grad school or med school

BC - honors program, will be paying around $27000 a year

Michigan - will be paying around $13000 a year plus airfare

UMass - honors program, will be paying around $2000 a year

UMass. Save your money for grad or med school.

I would say that $13,000 for UMich is a GREAT deal, but I don’t know your parents financial situation. The UMass is unbelievably affordable, but if your parents can afford Mich, that would be my choice. Responding partly to bump this for you -looks like you are down to the wire on decision making.

I agree with the above. Depending on your financial situation it sounds like UMich or UMass is the best bet since you’ll need money for med/grad school.

Michigan hands down. They are a world recognized top school and most of their grad schools are top ten such as law and business.

Agreed. Michigan is the better choice over UMass IF the $13,000 a year is not being paid by taking out loans (by you or your parents). If it is, then you’ll have over $50,000 in loans before you even start grad or med school. While UMass is generally not rated nearly as high as Michigan, it is very strong in the sciences. Do well at UMass and you could go to Michigan for grad or med school. If your parents can pay the $13,000 out of pocket, by all means go to Michigan. Ann Arbor is a great town, and if you’re into sports there’s nothing like going to a Michigan football game with 105,000 of your closest friends! I grew up outside Detroit and had several friends who went to Michigan, although I now live in Massachusetts.

Absolutely Michigan. Michigan is going to open doors that will be completely out of the picture for UMass and even BC. Michigan, particularly if you have an interest in finance, could end up meaning a completely different career trajectory. The top finance firms all care very much 1) where you went to college and 2) your job after school. Michigan is a accepted as a feeder on the street (along with the Ivies, Duke, Northwestern, and others), UMass is not. The 13,000 is absolutely worth it.

Extremely poor form to triple deposit…perhaps finance is your future!
