Boston college..no extra essays!

i am so happy boston college doesn’t have any supplement essays! but does that mean that more emphasize is going to be be put on grades, extracurricular and scores?

Dear starcrane721 : Well, is there anything else that you would like BC to consider? Those areas should be reflected in your essays. With 31,000 applications, there is a large amount of filtering that takes place at the qualifications level.

well, i like boston area and BC is a very good school that will give me a good education...i am just surprised that it doesn't have supplemental essays like the other really good schools does

BC gets a massive amount of applications and they can't possibly read through that many essays in time.

How much do you think they consider the additional information section? Looking back I think I put some stupid stuff on there that was probably unnecessary.

Yes, and unfortunately it means 35,000 other people find it just as easy as you do to just "click" to apply. I am helping guide my younger sister (remotely via phone, etc) as she navigates the admissions process and I am astounded at how some of the schools she is applying to (UPenn and Tufts come to mind) have a HUGE number of extra essays and hoops to jump through. It seems almost not worth it compared to the ease with which she could apply to schools with very thin supplements. But considering that it probably causes some level of self-selection to occur due to applicants having to decide where they can spend their time applying, the extra essays most likely are designed to reduce the number of 'drive-by' applicants that schools without deep supplements end up getting. Of course, the extra essays if poorly executed also provide another potential 'land mine' for rejection. It's a double-edged sword for sure.
