Boston U or Northeastern for engineering?

I got accepted to both school but not sure which school would be better for mechanical engineering. I think bu might be more prestigious but neu has an excellent co op program. Which school do u guys think would be the best for my major?

Thanks!

“Prestige” doesn’t matter much in engineering, and any difference between the two is not going to make much difference in opportunities after graduation.

As I read the two campuses, NEU writes about coops and jobs, and BU writes about research and entrepreneurship.

Which appeals more?

Agree with the others. Northeastern if you’re career focused. Use the Co-Op to build a resume and experience and lock up a job before you graduate.

Go with Northeastern. Its an up and coming University. Take a look at NEU’s co-op program and its job placement data.

NEU is also cheaper than Boston. I see this as a clear choice.

BU is prestigious?

Is Northeastern really cheaper? They seem pretty comparable.

not sure if its true but neu feels more like a technical school but bu has more of that college vibe to it. Also, I transferred after two years at my old college, does anyone know if transfer students get co ops ?

@chardu prestigious as in more well known. People in Cali, where I’m from, knows boston u but I doubt anyone has really heard of northeastern here in the west coast. So if I wanted to apply for a job in Cali, I would assume that I would have a better chance if I put boston u on my r

I think you are trying to create a larger difference out of these two schools than actually exists. They have different strengths in terms of engineering programs. BU is most known for biomedical engineering. NU is most known for civil/industrial/electrical. Id be highly surprised if either of them is more known in California that the other. I will say there are engineering co ops that already exist in CA. That is how you are most likely to get a job in California, by interning or co-oping at a firm there.

I can only speak for my high school and city in Southern California. BU is definitely more well known than NEU here. Many students from my high school apply to (and attend) BU. I have only heard of a few students applying to/attending NEU. When I have heard NEU mentioned, most people have not heard of it and know nothing about the school. Many are familiar with BU.

The west coast? A few years ago NEU announced plans to open a campus in Seattle. No joke.

^ Are you talking about the graduate campus that already opened in Seattle?

I doubt it would have much (if any) impact on NEU’s reputation in California. Especially since that campus is close to irrelevant to prospective undergraduate students. And it’s in Seattle, not CA.

Boston University is more well known in CA because the name is easier to recognize (attached to a city). Also, traditionally BU has been much stronger and has attracted more CA kids than NEU since NEU was more of a commuter school. Reputations can take a while to catch up to the actual school’s standing. In the Boston area, they may be seen as peers (deservedly so, and some may even argue that NEU is stronger and vice-versa…), but from my experience that is not the case in CA for high school students and their families.

Does this really matter? Probably not, but it is still true from everyone I have encountered.

Also my guess would be that BU enrolled more OOS CA kids than NEU, but I can’t find any data on representation by state for both schools. I do know that for class of 2016, CA was the third most represented state at BU behind NY and MA.
