Boston University Questions?

I posted this on another forum but go not replies.

Has anyone had a student at Boston University and if so did it meet your expectations and if not why? DS is seriously considering adding it to his short list of schools to apply to. I have read some reviews that said there is a problem with grade deflation and that the administration does not care about the students. Are they only interested in the money each student brings in?

Did your student have problems with housing?

Do they have an Honors College and what was it like?

Two of the BU students that I know well both ended up transferring, one to SUNY Binghamton (back in the day) and one is trying to transfer to Brown.

Living almost right next to BU, I know a fair share of people who go to BU : ) I probably won't have answers to your specific questions, but

Some people love it there, some don't. From what I've heard, it has a pretty impersonal environment, but if you want to thrive there, you definitely can. Even though it's a private college, I would say it has an environment much like the better state colleges, ie UMich or UVA. There are some duds, but many really, really, smart and motivated students too. It has a reputation around here for being a school where lots of rich students "buy" their way in, and I know the FA isn't great, but most of the people I know who go there are just plain old middle class and got pretty decent aid.

Some other points: it has pretty great name recognition (maybe due to sports?), a strong alumni network, and great marketability.

^ That rich thing I hear a lot too.

I think you're referring to Boston College.

The problem with BU is that in almost all cases your state's flagship public would be a much, much better value.

My fiance was a presidential scholar at BU and hated it. The kids for the most part are former prep-school C-students whose parents bought them into the school.

Lots of long lines and red tape to do just about anything.

^That's kind of a cynical way of looking at it.

From the people I know that have been there, enjoying it is what you decide to make of it. There is no campus and the overall "school spirit" is lacking due to a limited sports program. But Boston is an awesome place to go to college and the city has tons to offer. While I'm sure there are preppy kids, for the most part the student body is strong and the academics are pretty solid. Really you need to look at it yourself to understand if it's right for you or not.
