That’s awesome!! Thanks for the information!
Hi congratulations to your son! I don’t know too much about the CGS program itself but from I have seen there are plenty of happy and accomplished students here and vice versa. College in general is what you make of it. I think overall, BU, has a strong reputation but I could be a bit biased. STEM here is known to be notoriously hard. As for CGS, it’s often the butt of the joke within the student body, that they really aren’t “BU students” given that students don’t complete the first traditional semester at BU, but instead join in the spring and complete their second semester abroad in the summer. Although, mostly, people really don’t care. CGS is a nice way to get your HUB units out of the way, plus it’s kinda cool to do a semester abroad IMO. However, I wouldn’t say CGS is for everyone. I wish I could offer more advice but I did find this informative thread on reddit your son might want to check out: Reddit - Dive into anything Best of luck with it all!
Does anyone know if BU is doing any official campus tours for admitted students by any chance?
Hi! There aren’t really limits per say to number of credits you can transfer at least that I am aware of. However, there are certain classes you can’t transfer depending on your major. For example, you can’t transfer AP Calc credit if you’re premed. I believe you would be able to exchange both classes for hub units. It is often the case you need multiple units of hub credits to complete the requirement anyway. My advice would be to transfer the credit regardless of what it offer in HUB, it’s still credit hours that can go towards your graduation requirement. If you have enough AP credits/transfer credits, you could even graduate early, or enrolled in a BS/MA dual-degree program or just have a really chill semester or senior year. Best option would be to email them: credeval@bu.edu and ask specifically about your options. It might be the case where both can be exchanged for credit but you can only use one to fulfill the SO I unit or they might give you two units of SO I for both. Good luck!
Last I heard, the campus is closed to visitors for now and BU does not plan on holding tours as of now. However, I can offer you some links for virtual tours: https://boston.university-tour.com/ Plus, we have a Minecraft tour as well lol: play.craftbu.com I can also do my best to answer any questions regarding campus and our housing.
thanks so much for the detailed reply!
Accepted 2nd semester start, summer London, CGS. Also offered similar at Northeastern. I just don’t understand these programs. What is up with making first year students go to London or elsewhere abroad? It also appears very talented students are being accepted but must first prove themselves. All full pay too.
It’s because a lot of students graduate from these schools in the Fall. Thus, they are able to allow freshman to start in the Spring.
For the people that got guaranteed transfer- can someone please copy and paste exactly what it said on your letter. I got rejected but in my letter. BU said that I can re-apply or transferred after 2 semester. I’m not sure if that’s guaranteed transfer because it did not specifically say I got guaranteed transfer.
Sorry for the spelling mistakes. I typed too fast
If you haven’t seen the Northeastern campus in 20 years you wouldn’t recognize it.
There is a limit of 32 AP credits that can be applied to a degree.
Someone posted a screenshot of the letter upthread. You did not get guaranteed transfer unless it says “guaranteed”.
I know it is very different from 20 years ago, for sure. I live in Massachusetts and am in Boston often (or was, before Covid). Many new, nice buildings at Northeastern. I, personally, love urban campuses.
Here is a copy of the guaranteed transfer letter that one student posted.
Is anyone able to confirm that BU does not offer any merit to transfer students, including guaranteed transfers? A guaranteed transfer student posted that they were told this by BU admissions last year.
Edited: found this on the BU website about merit for students transferring from Boston community colleges. Is there any other merit available to transfers?

S accepted to CAS for Computer Science. Not qualified for financial aid. Unfortunately, no merit scholarship. Accepted EA for NEU with scholarship and my son’s first choice. BU definitely out at this point. Waiting for Tufts, NYU, and some Ivy’s. Good
luck and congrats everyone!
Unless it says “guaranteed transfer” they are just saying that you can reapply as a transfer student for the fall of your sophomore year. In addition, when you go into your portal, it will also say “next steps” and when you click on it you will actually accept the offer of the guaranteed transfer, which is non-binding.My daughter was offered guaranteed transfer and since it’s non-binding you have nothing to lose by accepting it. I already have one daughter who is a junior at BU and she also transferred in back in her sophomore year (she had to reapply no guaranteed transfer). If you have questions about transferring I can attempt to help.
I work at a University and the most hours a student can work under federal work study is 19.9 hours. Most of the student workers in our office can only manage around 10-12 due to rigor of their coursework and trying to balance their extracurricular activities like clubs and groups they are in.
My older daughter transferred into BU in her sophomore year with a 3.4 from Ithaca College and was offered no merit scholarships only need-based. When I spoke to a financial aid officer at the time, I was told transfer students don’t receive merit scholarship. With that being said I am not sure about if you are offered “guaranteed transfer”. Your best bet is to reach out to the financial aid office and inquire. My younger daughter also received guaranteed transfer and my recommendation to her is if BU is her dream school to accept the offer and send everything in they require and see what happens with financial aid. Also go to whatever school you decide upon with an open mind. You may make friends and enjoy the experience that transferring won’t even be in your thought process. Best of luck to you wherever you go.
