I'm pretty sure that affluent students are prominent in most campuses, but from the research and student reviews i have read about BU, that all too familiar "rich, snobby, student" seems more evident on their campus compared to the other schools I've been looking at (GWU, American, Northeastern). Coming from Hawaii, we're a rather humble state, and personally, i don't want to be put into such a situation where showing off reigns over doing good academically.

So my question is, does this stereotype affect the typical college experience--especially at BU?

hahahaha that won't change at GW either. Yes, we're an extremely wealthy school. I find the girls to be especially snobby (for the most part). The guys arent at all. I know plenty of poor and regular middle class kids. It's all about how you show it. Girls wear extremely nice clothes. I know a guy who drives a $76,000 BMW. There's really all kinds of kids here.

I've taken courses there over the summer and visited repeatedly, and it didn't seem any more "preppy" to me than most schools. The main sign I saw of this was that students who have a lot of contact with visitors, such as tour guides and residence assistants, are dressed far more nicely than their counterparts at a school like UMASS Amherst. However, as long as you have at least one set of new, neat clothes for these occasions and know how to iron them, there shouldn't be a problem in regards to not fitting in.

At all private universities there will be a subset of very wealthy students, but in a large university you will be able to find many other types of students as well. I wouldn't let this deter me from going to a school that met all my other requirements.
