How difficult is it to get accepted at Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Orchestra Program? What is the level of most of the cellists?
In general, it is very difficult to get accepted at Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Orchestra (YAO) program. Other BUTI programs are less competitive than the YAO program. I don’t know much about the chance for cellists, but the level of woodwind players are very high — most accepted students are rising conservatory/music school freshmen.
I would say slightly under half the wind players in BUTI YAO this year were rising Freshmen or rising seniors at performing arts schools. The percentage of students at that level was a bit lower among the string players in general, but my daughter does know string players who were accepted into other summer programs and rejected from BUTI.
