Tanglewood Waitlist

Does anyone have any experience with Tanglewood’s Waitlist? Did you eventually get accepted?

Yes a lot of the kids get accepted after being waitlisted.

@RondoInBFlat, I think that might be a bit of a generalization. It very much would depend on the program and the instrument. I have heard that some instruments are very competitive and waitlist spots rarely open up.

That may be true. I only know piano and I know many kids who got in after being waitlisted.

@toomanyflats, which program are you asking about? In the past, I have found that the people in the Tanglewood office are pretty helpful, by which I mean that if you ask them straight out if there’s a chance, they’ll usually give you a pretty helpful answer. Lots of places are not as open about waitlist, IMHO.

My D was accepted to the bassoon workshop and wait listed for Wind Ensemble. She found out this week that she got accepted to the Wind Ensemble. Was only on the wait list for 5 days.

Getting into the Wind Ensemble off of the waitlist is not quite the same as getting into the Orchestra off of the waitlist. Many who get into the Wind Ensemble and are waitlisted for the Orchestra tend to go to other festivals that have orchestra. Not to burst your balloon, but if I were to rank Tanglewood Orchestra and Wind Ensemble among the other programs, I would put YAWE after the other major orchestra programs. That’s not to say that the experience isn’t fantastic. It’s just not AS fantastic as the orchestra programs of Brevard, Eastern, and Interlochen among others. Most kids (that don’t play sax) seem to value the orchestra programs more.

Yeah, it is quite hard to get into Tanglewood Institute Orchestra, which is a very selective youth orchestra.

I will tell you that if your wind player is interested in chamber music, the opportunities for members of YAWE are much better than for those in the orchestra. Particularly for brass players, chamber music summer programs are hard to find, and ones of this length and caliber are even harder to find.

My daughter is on the wait list for youth orchestra in cello… any hope?

dutch18, in general, few students decline the acceptance offers to YAO. But you can call Tanglewood Institute to find out the likelihood.
