I'm a Sophomore at Belmont University in Nashville TN. Weighted high school GPA of about 3.6. Was an A and B student my first semester in college, A B student second semester with two classes that I got a C- (I slacked... bad me) but I'm studying hard this semester and getting all As and Bs. I'd estimate by the end of this semester I'll have a 3.1 or 3.2 college GPA. I scored a 31 on the ACT. Won't need any financial aid from BU. I have a lot of volunteer work and job experience. I'm a Biology major with the intention of going into genetics research.

Basically, am I a lost cause? I really want to go to BU in the fall of 2013.

Also I took loads of APs in high school and got 3s and 4s on all of them.

My volunteer work involves:
3 years at a humane society (I still dedicate a few hours a week)
I tutored undereducated people seeking their GED at the local YWCA (a women's shelter) over the summer and most of my Senior year in high school
I tutored inner-city children for a semester

My leaderships include: Camp counselor at a Lego camp over the summer before my Freshman year of college.
This is work and leadership but I interned at the Nashville Metro Health Department. I would go around the county trapping mosquitoes, then determining their species. If they were the right species I would sex them (only the females bite) and we would test them in the lab for West Nile Virus. If a West Nile positive bug was found we would go on the local news and warn the community, as well as provide safety tips about mosquitoes and West Nile.

Since my Junior year in high school I have worked as a receptionist at a radiology practice, working up to 15 hours a Saturday.

I am not applying for any scholarships of financial aid of any kind if that makes a difference.

Oh I forgot to add here are my APs
European History
American History
Biology
English Language and Comp
English Lit
Government
Macroeconomics
Music Theory

Not sure why boston university would want someone with a 3.1 transferring from an easier university into their school.

One of my school’s Top 10 student with a 4.0 GPA got rejected from Boston University and he went to nationals in Debate. Definitely a high reach for you.

Alright thanks guys. Anybody else?

If I don’t get into BU what are some other schools in Boston that would be good for me?

You aren’t really in the position to transfer.

I would say apply to your ACT score is excellent and should help although your college GPA may be detrimental but the fact that you do not need any financial aid will be positive. If you really want to go to school in Boston you are basically set for UMass-Boston and Suffolk University. Actually maybe in take a look at Emerson College.

It doesn’t look like Emerson offers any science majors at all, but I have heard good things about Suffolk. Is Suffolk a decent school?

Are Suffolk and UMASS Boston the only other schools in downtown Boston?

There is Simmons College and Wheelock College but I really don’t no anything about them aside from them being in Boston and there are a few other schools that I have never heard of in Boston. If you GPA was a tad bit higher I would suggest looking at Northeastern but you might as well apply there. Obviously Harvard and MIT are in the area but they both have extremely low single digit transfer acceptance rates for a few thousand applicants. As you already know Boston College is an option but more selective than BU and Northeastern.

Yeah I know that BC would be a very high reach for me. I guess all I can do is raise my GPA as high as I can this semester and write a really good essay and pray I get in. If not I have Suffolk University as my safety school.
