Bowdoin vs Middlebury vs Colby

wait do you know me.... why would you assume that I don't have social skills.. having social skills or lack or thereover is not an excuse for people to mock your accent because you are from a specific part of the country.. I really wish I could make more concrete examples... then there goes my cover

hellojane, i highly recommend joining a club or getting involved in a sport. i am a person of diversity and i have an accent as well. however, those things give me part of my individuality and i feel that people respect it here. some people are going to be saying bad things and perhaps mocking you at certain times throughout your life. you have to learn how to deal with it. you'll make friends if you join clubs, a sports team, or do community service. don't give up
i'm sure there are some ignorant people, but i'm even more sure that there are even more open-minded and friendly people.

well im sure people don't mock your accent thats immature and something high school kids do.

my point is, just because you've had a bad experience making friends socially, you shouldn't rip the school apart on these forums. because thats not the truth neccessarily for eveyrone else.

Cilyboi, where do you think that Bowdoin gets their students? Let me give you a hint, they get them from high school. Stop ripping on people for sharing their experience here at Bowdoin, or would you further like to exemplify the narrow minded behavior adopted by the majority of students here? He in no way trying to represent a whole, but merely trying to explain what he has gone through. You can keep it to yourself if you don't agree, or you can explain to us how wonderful your experience is at Bowdoin.

...cilyboi

cilyboy.... you named yourself that for a really good reason. to be frank... I have heard this bs before. Of course people have mocked my accent..., and you are so ignorant to suggest that I cannot make sense of this social environment, which goes back to my so-called social ineptitude. I am not the only one who has had these experiences many have, but any people are not going to openly state them.... I have the right to say what I want to say... its the same ingorant mindset that has has permeated my experience here for the worse, and many.. You don't have to look that far to find people who have had similar experiences.

bowdoin definitely

HelloJane and dor really seem to hate Bowdoin. Are these two the rare exceptions or do a lot of people dislike the school. I just returned from an overnight stay, liked everything I saw and heard (in the middle of a Noreaster) and was about to send in my acceptance, but now I'm beginning to wonder. I'd hate to think my four years at Bowdoin will be as awful as it is for those two.

there will be people everywhere who dislike where they go. if you liked bowdoin and had a good feeling about it, even in the middle of a storm, send in your acceptance. no school will appeal to everyone who choses to enroll. bowdoin is no different than many top schools in keeping students happy. but always keep in mind that your experience should not hinge on whether a few students are unhappy in college.

Hellojane and Dor are two bitter roommates, I believe, who do not represent a majority opinion on this campus.

Oliver..we know that already. They must be bitter for a reason and I think they need to be heard as a 'minority' opinion.

billsh1 - oliver did not say that they shouldn't be heard. he was answering the question about whether their sentiments are common on the bowdoin campus (answer: no).

Thank you, Allison.

If you go to the Middlebury website you can "ask a Middkid"about the school's programs, academics, social life etc. It might give you a better idea of the school. I have a friend (pre-med) who chose Bowdoin over Middlebury because of the science programs. She (a 4.0 student through highschool) is finding them difficult and challenging, but in the good way. She's very happy with her decision. Both places will have some sort of social niche for you, and most everyone will be very smart and very motivated. Location wise, Bowdoin is closer to civilization (Freeport and Portland's a little farther away), but Middlebury is beautiful and has a ski mountain!

I am not roommates with Dor, and Oliver I think that people like you are part of the problem with this school, and not the solution. You represent the arrogance and closed-minded nature of this place. Of course you are going to say that this is good because the bottom line is that this school is made for people like yourself. I do think that my opinion needs to be heard. Thanks!

Hellojane - How do you know you're not roommates with Dor???

Allison...From following these postings I assume that Oliver was making a comment that dor and hellojane are two bitter minorities. Also that most minorities do not feel that way. I'm sorry if I misinterpreted the postings. BTW are you a minority? Are you happy there?

In a prior post, hellojane said that she was from an underrepresented area of the country but was not a member of an underrepresented minority group. And I don't think that Oliver ever said that either person was a minority.

sorry, billsh1, white girl here (... i am very much in the gender minority in my major, though). i am pretty happy here - there are a few things that i wish had been different during my years here (i'm graduating in a month), but on the whole i'm very happy with bowdoin, and i think most of my regrets are due to things that are my fault, not the fault of the college itself.

Hellojane, allow me to apologize if I am wrong in categorizing you. Through talking with someone who lives near me in the dorm, I believe that I know who you are - perhaps I am wrong. If so, I am sorry. But I currently have had reason to suspect that you and Dor are in fact roommates.

And Billsh1 - I am not saying that these people are two bitter minorities. They do appear to be unhappy at Bowdoin, and if you read postings, I think one of them claims to be from a minority ethnic group and the other from a geographic minority (I am not sure on this, you'd have to check the record). What I am saying is that these two people appear to be unhappy, and that I feel that the majority of Bowdoin students who I interact with are happy here.

Hellojane, nowhere do I say that your opinion need be stifled. However I do feel it is disingenuous if your try to pass your beliefs as a majority opinion here. You're welcome.
