Bowdoin vs Middlebury vs Colby

Hi everyone, I’m really hesitating between these three colleges, even though it’s more between Middlebury and Bowdoin. I know Middlebury is more known for foreign languages, but I’m really interested in science. Do you know which is better for research opportunities and lab facilities?

Of the three Bowdoin would be the best for sciences (just give what I know from my friends at Colby and Middlebury). Bowdoin has a truly phenominal list of science faculty. Bowdoin's strongest science departments are biology, chemistry, and neuroscience. The lab facilities are also very very nice (when I was visiting other colleges, nothing compared to quality of Bowdoin), since the building that houses: Chemistry, Biology, and Geology is pretty new (it was rennovated in late 1990s). Also in terms of research opportunities there are plenty and basically you get to choose who you want to do research in. A handful of students are even rewarded with a journal publication. Just to give you a sample of research topics people study, they include: neuronal regeneration in cricket auditory neurons, methyltransferases effect on pathogen yeast, study of wall associated kinases in plants and their function, evolutionary development of C. elegan sperm, etc. So as you can see there is a diverse group of topics to do research in. If you have any more questions please let me know. Good luck with your decision process.

Here are fellowships they give out for research each summer:

bowdoin is also really good for government/political science stuff. if you care about reputation and rank, middlebury and bowdoin are on a much "higher tier" than colby.

i wonder what traveling abroad is like at bowdoin? popular? does it exist even? like IR study and stuff?

travelling abroad is available at epractically every school. vrlli

Studying abroad is very popular at Bowdoin and widely available.

Middlebury's new science center also rocks. And it has the largest window in Vermont!

yeah i live in middlebury. the science center isn't "new" it's been around for a long time. it's the tallest building in the town of middlebury (5 stories? which is nothing compared to how tall the buildings are on Bowdoin..and that MASSIVE skyscraper? like WHAT is THAT?) but it's reallllyy nice i have to say, it has these two massive windows that overlook the rolling fields of vermont..so beautiful

I guess "new" is a relative term. Someone above mentioned Bowdoin's new science center, which was completed in 1997. Bicentennial Hall opened in 1999. And yeah, what is up with the Coles Tower at Bowdoin? That thing is U-G-L-Y.

haha I don't think it's ugly I like how theres a massive tower at Bowdoin :) OMG WELL BOWDOIN HAS A TALLER BUILDING THAN MIDDLEBURY!

thats just what it comes down to when you have to make decisions.

A Google Sketchup model of the Tower:

yeah that's pretty awesome looking

There is only one good thing about this school, and that would be the science department is actually quite good.

The science department is good, but please narrow your choice down to your major because the same type of ignorant people permeate these school. You know elite, preppy. If that is you, then you will feel at home.

i disagree, i think a person who is not preppy and elitist would feel comfortable at bowdoin. in addition, the vast majority of people at bowdoin are very far from ignorant. how did you reach your conclusion?

...dor, what a dumb comment. government/legal studies pretty much is ranked #1 out of all other liberal arts schools?

I have a similar choice to make (bowdoin, midd., and dartmouth). I think I've decided to enroll at bowdoin. I liked the campus and the location the best.

Karl Rove, I go here. I reached my conclusion by interacting with the people that go here. You say that the people are not ignorant . If you base your argument on the basis of SAT's, florid arguments that they learned in class, then they are not ignorant. But when it comes to their view real worlds issues such as race, and socio-economic standing. They are ignorant. I'm not going to spend all my time giving perspective students, a one-sided view of why they should come to bowdoin. All of these schools are similar, but they [not the traditional preppy students] should have an idea of what they are getting themselves into--especially the international students, whom do not have another place in America compare the inequalities of prejudices of Bowdoin here.

Cilyboi, you come here for a few years and then tell me rankings still mean something to you. Until then, nice try.

hellojane. there are prejudices everywhere...i mean it doesn't matter what college you go to it's not like some colleges are "100% prejudice free". and plus maybe some people just don't have social skills which is fine but then they will start thinking that people don't like them and get all negative about life cough
