Bowdoin vs Middlebury vs Colby

Sorry aloutak - I guess I misconstrued your comment:

"I don't know, this thread has confused me and redirected my plans away from Brunswick and toward Hanover."

no problem

I don't just sit in my room. People see me all the time on campus. I'm not that hard to find. Plus I can say that Erby and Elmer from experience aren't in the best interest in Bowdoin. They are using bowdoin as a stepping stone as we all do. People only care about themselves. When it comes to those two, working to makes Bowdoin more "diverse" keeps their pocket books from being empty. I can say that from experience. We are just telling you are that things don't seem as open as they seen. People like dor and I canno get that perspective out at this school, that's why we don't work through the school to change it, because it just won't work. I'm speaking from experience here.

WAKE UP FROM THE "DIVERSITY" DREAM?

science = bowdoin

Can we please return to the original question posed by this thread and stop attacking one another.

obviously Bowdoin has the highest grad school placement rates among the 3 mentioned colleges. If you're planning to attend MBA, med school, or law school, go to Bowdoin

Yes, according to the WSJ rankings, bowdoin does send more kids to top grad schools, but Midd is still up there (i think only three spots behind bowdoin). I mean is bowdoin, in terms of overall academics, and the quality of teachers, all that much better than middlebury?

Great faculty members in Economics, sciences, and government/ legal studies. They are second to none amongst other LAC profs

It depends upon what you are interested in . . Middlebury would be superior to Bowdoin in foreign languages while Bowdoin would be superior in sciences and government. You implied that you were interested in pre-med in one of you're earlier questions and, if that's the case, Bowdoin should probably be your choice.

Both schools are great schools academically so you probably won't go wrong either way as long as you are a strong student. However, there are important distinctions between the two, some of which involve subjective considerations (smaller size and intimate campus at Bowdoin versus sprawling and hilly Middlebury campus; ocean versus mountains; the deeper and long history of Bowdoin; Maine versus Vermont and so on).

So i definitely get the impression that bowdoin does a better job with pre-med students, but in all honesty i'd rather go to midd. But excluding any bowdoin comparisons, will midd still do a good job in helping me get admitted to top med schools?

aabar - There are SO many variables that can affect a newspaper poll like the WSJ's; some people will point to the geographical bias in the choice of so-called "top schools". But, since Bowdoin and Middlebury are both located in New England, that can't be the chief explanation. Fact is, there is a little bit of self-fulfilling prophecy involved here; if people believe over time that Bowdoin is better for pre-meds, more pre-med students will matriculate there. It has nothing to do with anything intrinsic to the Bowdoin environment or approach to education. Like I said before (ws it this thread or the exact same one on the Middlebury board?) -- go where you want.

I doubt there are substancial differences between the med school placement rates at Middlebury and Bowdoin.

Well I just PM'ed this to you, but your mailbox was full.

Hey,

I'm going to Middlebury next year, but I'll say this, Bowdoin vs. Middlebury = doesn't matter which one you pick, they are both tremendous schools. They're basically identical in terms of quality of academics and the caliber of the student body. A Bowdoin grad with a 3.8 GPA applying to med school is the same as a Midd grad with a 3.8 GPA applying. I don't think anecdotes count for much, but my mom went to Middlebury and got into a fine Medical School (I think it was somewhere in Cambridge, MA...hmm...something ending in "arvard").

I don't really buy that the sciences/government at Bowdoin are stronger than they are at Middlebury, or that the languages at Middlebury are better than Bowdoin's. Once you get schools of this caliber, almost everything they do will be good. If there are any differences, I would think they're negligible.

Let other things guide you in your decisions, don't worry about the prestige/quality of academics/grad school placement- they are the same. Think about which school felt "right". I applied ED to Middlebury because it has ~650 more undergraduates than Bowdoin, which was a plus for me (1700 seems a little small). If Bowdoin had had 2350 kids and Middlebury 1700, well, then I'd probably heading up to Brunswick next year. You really can't make a bad choice. Lemmie know what you decide.

I chose to matriculate to Middlebury late last night while talking to my parents about both schools. For me, midd was just a better fit. I realized i was overthinking the choice when all along i knew Middlebury was the place i wanted to go. Thanks for all the help CCers, and go panthers!! :)

boo panthers - go polar bears!

When we beat y'all in hockey at Dayton next year, say hi - I'll be cheering loudly.
