Bowdoin Waitlist

I, like many other hopeful students, was waitlisted. Does anyone have any insight on how the waitlist process fully operates. Is there any influence on the procedure of getting taken off and accepted? Is there any chance, I will hear before May 1st?
Feel free to post any answers, additional questions, and general comments.

I think the most important thing you should do is show them how interested in them you are. You might check out the post that @itsallgood1 made on page 9 of the Regular decision class of 2017 discussion thread. The things that her deferred son did to try to switch his deferred status to accepted status would be great actions to take in your situation as well. Unfortunately, I don’t think you will hear about getting off the waitlist until after May 1.

Good luck!

Its all going to depend on how many acceptances they get back from their offers. All schools use wait lists to “top off” their classes. If they don’t have a good yield from the offers they’ve put out, they will draw from the wait list. I would call, write, email them telling them how much you want to go there. Don’t be obnoxious but be persistent and insistent. Give them reasons to want you. Tell them about how your interests in xxx that they teach well (environmental studies, government, robotics, whatever) fits with your interests, skill, enthusiasm and talent for xxx. This might require digging though their college catalog, etc, etc.

Bowdoin is highly interested in people who value service to the community and the common good. If you share that interest, then communicate it. Tell them something new about you that wasn’t in your original application material. If you were wait listed, they know you are capable. When they go to the wait list, you want them to say “How about that Matlin person? They sound so interesting, I can’t believe we deferred Matlin. Matlin is just the person we want!”
