Bowdoin's Strengths

What are the strongest majors/programs at this school? Any other areas of strengths that you know like sports, faculty, etc? Thanks!

The Government department is very highly rated. They have very good professors and the major can entail a plethora of concentrations (I’m applying for the International studies one)

The most highly regarded Academic departments include Government, Economics, and Biology (especially if you’re interested in Marine Biology; while they don’t have that specifically as a major, the college has its own coastal studies center where students study that subject)

They have many opportunities for students to go abroad - probably since people get tired of small-town Maine and want to get away after a while

Probably the main area of strength - or most talked about - for Bowdoin is its quality of life. The FOOD is top-notch, as everyone likes to rave, the dorms are wonderful, and the campus/surrounding area is beautiful. This is a very attractive feature for a lot of people.

i don’t know how good the ice hockey team is, but it’s the most popular sport there

they have a fantastic outing club. I think it’s the second largest collegiate outing club, next to Dartmouth… and most people at Bowdoin would definitely cite it as a strength

Also, the campus security is very good. This may sound weird, but Bowdoin students think that their campus security staff goes out of its way to help them out all the time, and makes their lives easier. For example, there’s a policy that if anyone is ever drunk and needs help, their friends can call security right away with absolutely no worries about being punished - so the students use this service often.
