fantastic program! I attended last summer and got to go to nation. the process is different depending on your state and unit/post. in most states, a local post/unit (american legion (boys)/american legion auxiliary (girls)) has to select and sponsor you. selection is done in a number of ways but generally involves an essay or an interview. they want to see that you are a leader in your school and community and that you have a genuine interest in the program. political activities and interests also can’t hurt.

What Is that?

It really depends on your local American Legion or Auxiliary. For my district, it wasn’t that hard getting into Boys State (probably due to the lack of interest). For Girls State, however, there was a lot of competition, so it was a bit tougher.

Just be sure to express yourself clearly during your interview, and having political/government interests should help your chances.

Boys State was a really fun experience. Don’t pass it up if you’re offered Girls State.
