Brackenridge Summer Research Fellowships

Can anyone provide comments on the Brackenridge Summer Research Fellowships? How hard is it to get a Fellowship? Where do you live during the summer months if you are in this program? How much time do you commit to the program? Is there an advantage to attending the Summer program vs. the Fall/Spring Brackenridge Research program? any other Pros and Cons.

i have another question. Is this program very competitive - does anyone know how many spots are available and how many students apply? thx

My daughter applied for one this summer and did not get selected. She had contacted a professor who said she could work for him this summer, but his department did not have money for paid internships. He recommended she apply for a fellowship and supported her application with a letter. Another classmate of my daughter also applied and was not selected. I do not know the numbers involved, but I would say that it is probably fairly competitive knowing my daughter’s background.

My daughter lives off campus, so she will just stay in her apartment, but she did a summer language program between freshman and sophomore years and lived in the Towers. We paid board for her to stay there.

DD is a rising senior.

VERY hard. Last year about 90 people applied for 20 spots. Also, if you are a science-researcher, it will be MUCH harder, because more science researchers apply than humanities, and UHC likes to balance the Bracks (which I think is unfair, but whatever).

Whenever you want. Generally people live in sublets off campus.

From what I’ve heard, there are weekly meetings with your advisor as well as all the other Bracks where you go over your progress and hear what other people are doing. Other than that, it’s whatever time schedule you and your professor (advisor) have worked out. Probably a 40-hour week.

For intensive research projects, summer is nicer since you can devote the whole summer to conducting your research. In the Fall/Spring, you have to balance research AND classes. Also, Fall/Spring will be new for next year I think, so no one can really talk about it right now, as it’s never happened yet.
