Hello! I'm currently a freshman at UMass who is considering transferring to Brandeis. I'm in the honors college here as well. I honestly have ZERO idea how the psych/soc programs at UMass compare to Brandeis, or anywhere. I've been told that the psychology program at Brandeis is well-respected and very good/rigorous, though I'm not sure how to find that out for myself. I also have no idea in what esteem the psych or sociology program is held at UMass.

Does anyone know how UMass's psychology or sociology programs compare to Brandeis's, or at least if they are highly regarded for grad schools? I certainly plan on going to grad school after I graduate, so would an education at Brandeis be better for that?

Any help at ALL would be so appreciated. I have no idea how to compare these schools/departments on anything more than "rankings."

Thank you so much!

I don’t know anything about the psych/soc programs at either place, but it sounds like you need to do some research about both programs. Why do you want to transfer? Brandeis is likely to cost considerably more than UMass and I’d say that unless the program is considerably better there and/or there are some unresolvable issues for you about UMass, you may want to think twice about transferring.

This is me trying to figure that out, as I’m not sure how I can “research” grad schools’ perspectives on the two schools.

I know very well that I’d enjoy Brandeis considerably more. I don’t know my financial aid package from Brandeis yet. UMass currently costs me about 27k/year, and if Brandeis can somehow knock the cost down to something similar to that, it’s a viable option.

What I’m really trying to figure out is:
if I have to pay more for Brandeis (obviously not the 60k+ price tag in full, that’s out of the question, but just a bit more than I do at UMass) if it’s worth it, and
if I end up at UMass, I’ll still be afforded relatively similar academic opportunities that I’d have at Brandeis

Thanks anyway :)
