Brazilian Portuguese at UCSD

Current and graduated students: Share your knowledge of Portuguese at UCSD.

I'm a Fall 2010 freshman who is considering Portuguese for her language requirements, but has no prior experience with either Portuguese or Spanish. I know some French but may not pursue it in college.

I'd like to know about the pace and design of the class, grading (lots of As until the curve is applied? Then what? Who rises to the top - Spanish speakers?), good/bad teachers, and difficulty for non-Spanish speakers. Please also share whatever second hand knowledge you may have, I'm welcome to all anecdotes and advice. I'd especially like to know if any BP learners would recommend Portuguese at UCSD to a freshman who wants a high GPA, is very interested in (Brazilian) Portuguese, and has solid aptitude for languages.

Thanks!

Hey, I can tell you that Portuguese was my first language, and that it was pretty weird learning spanish in high school. I got confused a lot.
