Hi!

I'm a Brazilian student (graduated from high school last December) of dramatic arts. I'm currently in one of the most prestigious acting schools in Brazil and I'll be going to Connecticut in September to the National Theater Institute.

I dislike the idea of going to college, but since I must do it next year, I want to pick a great one. My focus is on acting, but it would also be great if there were other classes such as directing. My grades are not ideal at all and I'm aware that I'd hardly get into NYU (although I consider that an option). I haven't taken the SATs, but my TOEFL scores are 100/120 (if that is a low grade for most colleges, I have the chance to take it again). So, it must be a college that values audition and portfolio/resume more.

I'm looking for acting programs in any English or German-speaking countries. So far I've considered:
- NYU Tisch or NYU Gallatin
- Julliard
- CalArts

I'd like a college that mixtures experimental and classic. Do you recommend any others? And what are my chances?

(I'm also considering the Universit

If you are willing to go to ANY English-speaking country, have you looked at schools in the UK (e.g. Great Britain)?. Some of the greatest actors in the WORLD are British, and come out of their incredible drama schools.

I haven’t look at British schools yet. The idea of studying abroad is actually pretty recent. Can you recommend some UK colleges?

Recommend some British acting schools? Good heavens, there are so many good ones!

Start with the schools of the Coservatoire for Dance and Drama. These aren’t all acting schools, but it includes the Bristol Old Vic, London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA), and the Royal Academy of Dramtic Art (RADA). Those three are probably (watch, someone will insist on debating this!) the best known theatre training programs in Britain, and among the best known in the world.

Beyond these, some of the better known ones are Central School of Speech and Drama, Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Those seem to be the ones that attract people with a serious interest in professional theatre.

I’m sure there are many others (I’ve got quite a heavy LONDON bias!!!), these ones I have suggested will be very difficult to get into.

Try researching some of the actors that you admire most, and find out where they got their training.

Don’t forget about the Royal Scottish Academy!

Thank you very much for your recommendations. Although I’m familiar with some, I’ll be researching those schools in the next few days.

I recently found out about the University of the Arts. Do you think this uni’s program competes with some of the above mentioned or is it a bit weak? I must admit I never heard of it before.

University of the Arts, London (I assume that is the one we are talking about) only came into existence in the late 80’s from a merger of several smaller colleges. So it hasn’t had much time to build up a reputation.

But some of the smaller colleges that merged to form this new university had been around for a long time, and have produced some very good actors. Especially Drama Centre London (which is now part of University of the Arts).

Again, think about researching specific actors that YOU admire, and find out where they went to school.
