Breakdancing = unique talent?

I started breaking at the beginning of the year, and I have been participating in a variety of school events and competitions. I also created a school club and a separate group that performs for kids in day care centers. Right now, I'm planning on writing my essay on breaking and its effects on my life. If I show a huge amount of passion for breaking (and no I do not dance just to help me get into college), do you think it could be considered a unique talent or even a potential hook? Thanks in advance.

Yes! Of course it is. Any essay that is self-reflective, shows passions, communicates in your unique voice and is well written is going to help you.

Thanks for the response. How many breakdancers (preferrably Asian) are in your schools? Around 10 out of ~2000 in my school break, and we’re all asian. Just wondering, because I keep hearing that breakdancing is a common talent among Asians, and I want to stand out more :D

Considering that break dancing is very prevalent, among any race, it is not that unique

It is most definitely not a hook (something almost guaranteed to get you admitted). I would say that it’s not an EC that will be eye-popping to admissions offices. But that’s not really the point.

When colleges look at ECs, it almost doesn’t matter what the EC is. What they want to know is what you’ve done with it, and how it has helped make you the person you are. Why is it important to you? What lessons has it taught you that carry over to other parts of your life? How have you grown in the EC? Have you demonstrated leadership in it? Passion? Commitment? Have you mentored others in it? Have you been able to connect it to other things? (Example: My D has danced most of her life; in HS, she joined our church’s dance ministry, applying her skills to something entirely unconnected to dance.) Can you write a great essay about it?

It sounds like you love this stuff, and that will communicate itself to admissions officers as you begin applying and writing essays. Be genuine; don’t worry about what others do; and don’t second guess yourself.
