breaking news: Students hit by SUV at UNC's "Pit"

from WRAL website:

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Authorities say that an SUV drove into The Pit at the UNC-Chapel Hill campus around noon Friday, hitting several students.

Live Sky 5 Video A student who witnessed the event, said that the SUV was going between 40 and 45 mph when it hit at least students.

Nicholas Altman, who was having coffee nearby, said that one man was hit and thrown onto the hood of the SUV, Altman said. That person was taken away on a stretcher, Altman said.

Altman said that the incident appeared to be intentional.

Something tragic two weeks in row ...this is crazy...

Good coverage of the incident and the subsequent arrest in the Daily Tar Heel...http://www.dailytarheel.com/

After a cartoon ran in the DTH, 4 Editors received written death threats. I believe secondary to a cartoon that was published prior to this unfortunate but apparently a deliberate act by Mohammed Reza Taheriaza, a 2005 UNC graduate.

I just pray that the students who happened to be at the Pitt and were injured will come out unscathed, both physically and emotionally.

This has not been a good time for UNC after the horrific accident involving the 2 students, which left one dead and the other, from what I hear still remains hospitalized in fair condition. I'm sure I can speak for all: Waiting to hear his condition upgraded to stable.....

Yeah I just left the pit a few seconds after it happend and was on my way to campus. I remember hearing screams and not thinking much of it because i thought it was the usual commotion at the pit. But when I got out of class early, I was shocked to see the whole pit area surrounded by yellow tape. It was so scary but everyone was just in shock and just confused on how someone would do this :( especially in such a public space to innocent people.
I am just thankful noone was seriously injured. Yeah, this definetly has not been the best of times for UNC. I guess we can all just pray for the better. But it was very comforting to see the way everyone at UNC has come together to cope with these tragic inncidents. It really shows you that there are still very sincere and good people out there.
I am also concerned about this turning into something more especially since he was identified as a muslim. Muslims already have a "bad" name and this is going to make things worse. I just hope people realize that one person's stupid actions does not represent an entire religion.
Ahh well i am going to stop ranting. Just had to let some of it out.

This event has me very concerned. Is there a lot of racist friction in NC-chapel hill?

This could have happened anywhere.... hopefully things will patch up soon.

I don't think it is a matter of racism at UNC, in fact, UNC is quite liberal. This is the result of an extremist that is a disgrace to UNC and to the Muslim religion. On the heels of the controversey with the European cartoons and impending civil war in Iraq, etc, the world is very tense right now. It truly could happen anywhere.

Didn't the student admit to police that he deliberately drove into the crowds in order to punish the U.S. government for it'd interference around the world? He is an international student, btw. I would not classify it as racism; perhaps an individual loner troubled person's attempt at terrorism?
