CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Authorities say that an SUV drove into The Pit at the UNC-Chapel Hill campus around noon Friday, hitting several students.

Live Sky 5 Video A student who witnessed the event, said that the SUV was going between 40 and 45 mph when it hit at least students.

Nicholas Altman, who was having coffee nearby, said that one man was hit and thrown onto the hood of the SUV, Altman said. That person was taken away on a stretcher, Altman said.

Altman said that the incident appeared to be intentional.

Something tragic two weeks in row ...this is crazy...

i was in the building right next to it (lenoir) getting lunch when it happened. When I went back there after class, around 1, there was police tape all around the whole area, and they were chalking the tire marks.

The story that is going around on the news right now is that the driver was in a chase from durham, came onto campus and clipped four or five people, and actually hit one kid who was thrown on to the windshield, and then continued north onto franklin street, where the car was found. I don't believe they've caught the driver, though.

For those that don't know the UNC campus... the pit is THE central part of campus. It is surrounded by a dining hall, the student union, 2 libraries, and student stores. Being a nice sunny day, and a friday, and the upcoming game against duke, there was a LOT of activity going on in the pit when this happened.... I don't believe anyone was seriously injured but it is a tragic thing nonetheless.

ok so now WRAL is saying that they have caught the suspect, and that the suv was swerving not to hit people, but still clipped some, and knocked a student out of a wheelchair (?!) and someone was actually hit and went up onto the hood.

After a cartoon ran in the DTH, 4 Editors received written death threats. I believe secondary to a cartoon that was published prior to this unfortunate but apparently a deliberate act by Mohammed Reza Taheriaza, a 2005 UNC graduate.

I just pray that the students who happened to be at the Pitt and were injured will come out unscathed, both physically and emotionally.

This has not been a good time for UNC after the horrific accident involving the 2 students, which left one dead and the other, from what I hear still remains hospitalized in fair condition. I'm sure I can speak for all: Waiting to hear his condition upgraded to STABLE FOR DISCHARGE.....
