The admissions at Andover has done a great great job in recent years. Jane Fried’s leaving is def Andover’s loss and whoever will take her position will have big shoes to fill!

BTW, what happened to Brearly’s last head? Was that a planned retirement?

It’s a huge loss for Andover. Hard to imagine anyone else doing her job there. Brearley is really lucky to have her.

The head has been there a long time and is retiring. The dean just had a great opportunity it sounds like.

@DAndrew: Here’s a NY Times article on the sudden departure of the previous head of Brearley:

^^Thanks for that link. Interesting story!

Jim Ventre has been waiting in the wings forever. I’m not thinking they’ll look far to replace Jane.

Or Mr. Leahy, maybe.

Read this on PA’s site a few weeks ago. By the way, The current head of DA used to be the Academic dean of PA…

It’s great to see schools celebrating the success of it’s staff as they are offered leadership positions elsewhere, especially as so many of them can give literally a decade or more of service to a school. I don’t know if they need to post it all over their website but to recognize it as a part of the process of running a successful school is appropriate and appreciated by me, and I’m sure others. At the Lawrenceville revisit day, from the stage, the Academic Dean mentioned that three people were leaving for positions as Head Masters and two others were leaving for other substantial positions at other schools. I personally found this remarkable; first that he said it and then that it was such a high number. But as i thought about it, I realized what a positive thing it is to have some level of movement. The academic dean said that the school attributes it to the staff development and culture of L’Ville. The school has many in service development days for staff, and that as a school they spend so much time learning about, and studying, how children learn so that they can improve their own techniques. Another thing to keep in mind, is that this movement from school to school by personnel is precisely why my DC’s current school counselor told us that we should make sure that we are gracious in how we conduct ourselves through this period (March 10 - April 10) especially when declining an offer, as the admission director of the boarding school you interviewed for, may work in the admissions office of the college/university you will be applying to in a few short years.
