First years aren’t supposed to bring cars to Grounds. You probably won’t want to bring a car until you are living in an apartment and even then, you don’t “need” a car here.

I drive once per week.

You might be interested in Home Ride. That’s a bus that goes from Grounds to Penninsula Center in Hampton (it also goes to VCU and the Vienna metro stop for the Richmond and NOVA students).

You really do not need a car unless you live further off grounds after 1st year.

S1 lives on Jeff Park Ave and did not take a car until this year for job interviews.
S2 plans to live off ground and says he does not want to bring a car.

I am sure that are enough people from your area that you can carpool with to go back home on breaks or weekends.

Third year son doesn’t have a car and lives by corner where parking is extremely limited. One parking space for the four guys in his apt. We live in Nova and he either catches a ride home or takes the train home. Oldest son (who graduated) had a car second year bur he was an RA and they had space to park at the stadium. However on game day he had to move it to U Hall parking lot or risk getting towed. I guess it just depends on if you have a safe place to park the car. If you go home a lot maybe it makes sense, but you probably really won’t be driving around that much in C’ville.

S1 and S2 will share a car next year. S2 volunteers through Madison House at a site that requires you to drive there. This year he gets a ride. He is going to continue there next year. They will be living near the corner and they have parking. Otherwise I do not think they would have a vehicle.

They have found as 1st years there really is no need to have a car-not that they could have one this year-the UVa and C’ville transportation system is great. But, better yet you can walk wherever you need to go too. S2 walks to Harris Teeter, Chipotle, etc. If he gets groceries then he takes the bus back. You will figure it out through your first year if you may need a car for second year. But, honestly it is nice to know you do not have to have it.

I am bringing my car (entering as a third-year - keep your fingers crossed anyway) because I have a boyfriend out of town in addition to family I’d like to visit. However, a lot of the off-grounds housing is still very close.

I would only if I had parking off street arranged. There are many nice places to drive outside of town as the countryside is very scenic. Skiing at Wintergreen, Blue Ridge Pkwy/Skyline Drive, exploring all the small towns, etc. But parking is tough and ticketing very active. So you don’t need one to get around town but to get out of town it’s very handy.

I had a car every year after 1st year. I am from PA so it was easy for trips home. I also worked downtown and had choir there, so I was downtown 2-4x per week. Taking the trolley late at night was not super fun so driving was better for me. I lived on grounds. I think it will depend on your situation whether you feel you need one or not. My roommate never had her car (I could drive her places).
