How often do you see college students bringing their musical instruments to their dorms? I am going to be going to a university that is six hours away and I want to continue to practice guitar and piano too. I’m planning to only bring electric guitar because I only started to play it last year. I played the piano for a long time so I figure I should balance out the skill on both instruments. I would most likely to join a club involving music and might form a band (possibly). Should I bring it or not and again how often do college students bring their instruments?
Bring the guitar but not the piano.
If nothing else, the guitar will look cool. If you have earphones you can use with the guitar you will be good.
No downside to bringing your guitar cuz it will fit under your bed.
Definitely not the piano for obvious reasons, but the guitar should be ok.
I don’t know how often it’s done our of all college students, but it’s certainly not unheard of. The kid down my hall when I was a freshman brought his guitar. One year, I brought my keyboard. A friend brought her flute. It’s really not much of an issue. I’m sure music majors do it all the time =D
If it’s small enough to bring, there’s no problem with bringing it. Campus will have some practice rooms if it’s too loud to play in your room. There might be a shared piano that you can play somewhere. One guy managed to bring a (small) drumset freshman year, but that’s pushing it in a dorm room. He kept it quiet at least.
Thanks for the advices and tips! I think I would definitely bring my guitar once I move in!
Bring your guitar, and possibly a small keyboard if you have one. I would check if your school has a music department because if so, you will have plenty of pianos to practice on and practice rooms to jam in,
Definitely bring it, so many college students bring instruments! There are usually practice rooms that you can reserve to play the guitar and most colleges also have practice pianos you can play, too. In fact, at most of the colleges I’ve been to some of the residence halls even have practice rooms, some with pianos, right in the hall.
My roommate last year brought instruments - a keyboard, french horn, and mellophone. Like others have said, there will be lots of practice rooms around. Usually in the music department but occasionally in the dorms (the “artsy” dorm at my school has a few).
Only one of mine was really into music in high school, and he didn’t bring his guitar up when we moved him in. Needless to say it was the first thing we put in the car on Parents Weekend. Bring it!
If you haven’t already moved in, consider buying a small keyboard. They go for about $60-100 and are two to three and a half octaves, which is more than adequate for most music, and really if you are playing in the dorms you probably won’t be practicing very seriously. There are probably practice rooms with full (though probably out of tune) pianos if you need them, but a little keyboard in your room also has the convenience and headphone factors.
I’ll bet that there’s a piano that’s available for use somewhere on your campus. You can bring a small keyboard, too, for some practice, but obviously there’s no substitute for an actual piano, even if you do get a keyboard with weighted keys. The feel is just always off, so I would recommend locating a piano on campus.
If your instrument is expensive, you might want to look into insurance for it. Often your parents homeowners insurance can include a rider for a musical instrument.
Totally second @stradmom on insurance for expensive instruments. Even inexpensive instruments should get some protection if they are important to you or your grades. My flute is not that expensive as instruments go but we are still getting a rider for it.
@runner019, I completely agree that there is no substitute for an acoustic piano, but for playing around with friends who have more portable instruments, or quick practice sessions if you happen to live across campus from the practice rooms and it is snowing out, a cheap keyboard is great.
