British Applicants

londonengland - well done on your offer to LSE. I'll probably be applying for Economics or Govt and Economics. And PPE for Oxford. Good luck with Harvard heh. By the way, how do you get ranked in terms of your entire year? Internal exams, class positions or GCSEs and external exams? I would rank quite highly on public exams but not so great on internal exams or class positions.. also were your teacher recs honest about you or were they a lot more complimentary than normal?

thefootscrubber - A* for Maths is about 65%, A* for English is about 90%. Sciences are about 70-80% and most of the rest are probably in the 80s.

Thanx Ace!

ace - i think my class rank is somewhere in the top 5 (that's the one they submit to harvard). its based on gcse results, ib predictions and report grades... so yeah compared to other people in my school. i only saw one of my teacher recs (my other teachers wudnt let me see them), and it was fairly honest actually but still complimentary. they didnt highlight anything negative, but didnt overdo the compliments.

I'm in sixth form atm (in london). I applied to harvard EA and was deferred so i dont know how much i can help you, i'll try though. My stats in short were GCSE- 8A* 1A 1B, AS- 5 As, SATI- 2270, SAT II- 700, 720, 720.

The competition internationally is pretty high so make sure you really do as well as you can. PM or reply if you need any other help

wow those SAT scores are rele high for a british applicant. wot kinda extracurriculars or additional things do u hav to make u stand out? i was deferred EA too... i duno how much of a chance ive got now tho!

Hi. I applied to Harvard EA from the UK, and got accepted.
I'm currently doing my A Levels in boarding school. About 11 other people have gotten in EA from schools in the UK.

wow, congrats

jus out of interest, wot were ur SATs like? wot other stuff did u submit to harvard that u think might have made them wana accept u?

nice one sphynx, you'r the first british person iv heard of who got in. No1 around me at all is even applying, talk of getting in.
londonengland, I've got a few ECs- national level bball, a few awards (nothing national that stands out and nothing international at all which were my major failings) and im urm (or i would be if i was an american citizen, i dont know how they look at it for internationals) having lived in 3 countries/continents.. thats nothing uncommon for harvard applicants though. All in all i have nothing especially unique to offer, maybe that justifies my deferentiation (hehe)

SAT 1: 2210
SAT 2: Maths 2c 770
English Writing 800 (took this one before they stopped issuing it)
Chemistry 770

1 pretty good essay, 1 really good additional essay.
Good recs
Good AS grades and A2 predictions
Lots of sports at school level, community service
Good resume- lots of work experience, ranging from stints at an investment banking firm to a mobile gaming firm
What really helped was an extensive project report I had made last year, on a trip to a village in India. I spent about a month there working on a water-harvesting project with a Non-Government Organisation, assessing economic implications and scope for development through such projects around the whole country.

And yeah, im from India but go to boarding school here in the UK.

At boarding school who does your counselor rec? Housemaster?

yup housemaster
