British student studying abroad in the US: What will college life be like for me?

Hi,

This is my first post, so please forgive me if this is the wrong forum.

In September I am going to be studying in the US from England. I have chosen to go to Washington University in St. Louis, MO. I am a US history nerd (that is what my degree is in) and I am very interested in the Old West, so WUSTL seemed a good choice - St. Louis is the 'Gateway' to the West after all...

I have a few questions about WUSTL and college life in the US in general:

What are students at WUSTL like? Will they be receptive to an international student, or will they be quite cold because they're already in their own cliques, etc.?

How big is greek life at WUSTL? I'd like to join a frat, but I am unsure whether I could because I will only be there a year! Would it be worth it?

I have heard mixed things about American women's opinions on British men. I know you can't really generalise, but what do US women tend to think of British men? I am hoping to date some American women: I love the sense of humour and style.

Is St. Louis a particularly nice place to live? I know it has public transport, etc. but I have heard it's a pretty horrible city. I think it looks nice from what I've seen on Google StreetView.

Will I get many opportunities to see the Cardinals? I love baseball and would like to see some MLB matches. Are the tickets quite expensive/hard to get?

I have many more questions, but if you could answer these first I'd appreciate it!

Thanks so much!

Welcome to CC and the US. I suggest also asking your questions at the forum for Washington University. Click on top universities on the list of CC forums on this website, and you will see a discussion section just for that university.

Work hard play hard and you’re sure to have a great experience

Women generally love british accents, so you should do great with women.

I’m a American college girl.

I love guys with British accents. I met a girl a few weeks ago who didn’t like accents. And that was really strange. Almost all girls love accents, so you’ll have a plus in that category.

I know a guy who went to school there. (He’s from North Carolina, so it’s quite a distance.) He really enjoyed his time there.

Americans LOVE accents, British ones in particular.

Washington University of St Louis is fairly selective, so the kids there will be smart, and many of them from different parts of the country.

I have a niece and a nephew at WUSL’s med school, and both are struck by how friendly everyone is around St. Louis. People there are just… nice. My niece and nephew are from California, so in the beginning St. Louis was almost as foreign to them as it will be to you! And they love the school, and like St. Louis. Yes, parts of the city aren’t terrific, but you’ll be spending most of your time on/near the campus. Beautiful campus too, though you Brits sort of set the standard with Oxford, Cambridge, St Andrews and Hogwarts ;)

I’d definitely look into a fraternity. Some may not be crazy about taking a member for only one year, but if I were a member of a fraternity at WUSL, I would think it would be really cool to have a British dude, if only for the chick magnetism. Good luck to youl

Actually, I think we love so many things British- music, humor, films/tv, lit, that nutty passion for soccer- our trends tend to take off from yours. Be open-minded, use your humor and you will have a good time.

If you can somehow get to historical sites or events within reasonable distance, go for it. As anywhere, some of the nook and cranny towns, historical sites, celebrations, etc, can be a delight. And let you see more about the variety in the US.

Missouri is BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING so try to see more than that while you’re here. Take a long road trip to someplace interesting. That will probably mean going South or East from Missouri. The interesting part of the West would be significantly farther away.
