British Student

Hey everyone! I put this in another thread but no one got back to me. I'm guessing this is a more popular forum? I am currently nearly 16 and it has always been my dream to study in the USA. I am British and want to have a career involved in the theatre - behind the scenes preferably although I do perform, OR in the media. What are the best unis in the USA who deal with these? Thank you in advance.

Just to toss some out: Julliard, USC, NYU, BU, New School, Michigan, Rochester?, Hopkins?, Indiana? (music influence is bleeding into my list...)

Thank you :D

Emerson too

Actually, you're asking a tougher question than you know. It sounds like what interests you is TECHNICAL theater, and the names you've been given are well-known for their instruction in the performing arts. A school that is good in one is not necessarily good in the other.

Here's what you do.

This is a link (<a href="http://www.lort.org/members.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.lort.org/members.htm</a>) to members of the LORT circuit. LORT stands for League of Resident Theaters, and these are the best theaters in the US. The link I gave you has links to individual websites. Contact the technical directors at those theaters and ask which schools tend to do the best job preparing people for technical theater. You may need to get specific (set construction/design, electricians/lighting design, costume construction/design, etc.), since some schools may be good at one and not the other.

If you're considering being a performer, then for God's sake, stay in the UK!!! UK-trained actors are the best in the world.

I know a couple of people going to Hopkins for it...and all I can say is you better like Chelsea. Apparently they bleed blue over there...and I'm not talking about blue jay blue
