I am going to be living in Brittney Hall over the summer, how is the food in Rubin hall (thats where i will be dining) and how are rooms in brittney? Pros/Cons?

You will need a fan. Maybe more then one. The lack of air conditioning will prove to be a formidable foe.

i live in brittany right now and it is my favorite dorm. you will definitely need a huge fan. i cant really imagine living here all summer because of the heat. the rooms in brittany are HUGE. by far the biggest of the freshmen dorms. also, brittany's location is awesome. really close to washington sq, just a few blocks from st.marks and union sq. brittany has carpet (not sure if thats important to you)

I figured i would probably need a sizeable fan, how close is Rubin Hall, and what about like the financial district and central park? Is the dorm basically located right downtown?

premieraw, use Mapquest or Google Maps to check out distances and such. The financial district is close to Water Street, which is one of the residential halls furthest from campus. Brittany is on 10th St., and Central Park starts at 59th. In short, both are quite far from Brittany. Rubin is two blocks away from Brittany.

lol thanks shade im well aware of mapquest, i was actually wondering in terms of walking distance, which i would assume a NYU Student would be pretty familiar with. Thanks anyways i guess.

premieraw, if you wanted walking times, just say so! :D Just asking how far away things are makes me think people can't use the Internet or something! :)

From 10th Street to Central Park is about 50 street-blocks. Depending on traffic, I can get from Palladium to Silver Center in 10-15 minutes, which is about 2 avenue-blocks and 6 street-blocks, so that's about 9 street-blocks, by my reckoning. I'd guess, then, that walking from Brittany to Central park would take at least 60 minutes.

From Palladium to the NYU bus stop is also about 10-15 minutes, and walking from the bus stop to Lafayette is about 20-30 minutes. Lafayette to Water Street is probably another 20 minutes, so again, it's probably at least an hour away.

If I were you, I'd take the subway. :D

How large of a fan would you reckon? Like one of those monster ones, that are two and half feet tall and just same the same as wide? I sweat kind of easily (anything higher than 75, I pant).

Pfft, you don't need a fan, you need a dehumidifier. Humidity in NY is killer, espeically given its proximity to all that water.

A decent sized fan might help, though ;)

How much would a decent dehumidifier and fan cost altogether would you say? Like maybe from Sam's or Walmart or something?

LimeButterfly, if you want to bring them from home, ask your local Sam's or Walmart. NYC has neither - the store most like those two would be Kmart. I'd still expect a noticable increase in price as compared to what it is wherever you live.

Request a switch to Weinstein. The heat will kill you with no a/c.

i got my fan for $30.... weinstein would be a lot nicer during the summer because of a/c.... but switching to weinstein also means TINY, jail-like rooms. i guess its a matter of whats more important to you... space or climate.

For those of you who lived there this year how bad was it in terms of the heat when you moved in (being that it is in the summer). I lived in the dorms this summer in Michigan with a very similar climate and it was bad, but not unbearable..Let me know what you guys think..thanks.

for the first month it was pretty bad in brittany. i found myself taking at least 2 showers per day because of the heat and humidity. also, nyu has locks on the windows, so they only open about 2 inches. thats why the fan is essential, otherwise it can become stiffling in the rooms. i really cant imagine living here over summer without a/c to be perfectly honest. it was ok to deal with it for one month.

Has anyone used a portable air conditioner in the dorms before? I think my cousin has one and I might be able to ask her for it, but are they very loud? Are they even allowed at NYU?

ive never heard of anyone with a portable a/c... how do those work? do you have to stick the other end out the window?
