Brown class of 2016?

I sent out a line earlier in the year asking for help, but I did not have all the data in yet. Indulge me, please, one more time. CAN I BE A BROWN GUY?

White, Jewish
suburban eastern public high school–gets some kids into Brown. Well regarded school, not stellar
class rank: number 1 out of 172
(took all the honors and advanced classes, APs etc)

SAT: CR 800 WR 800 M 710 (Sigh-took it twice, same scores)
SAT II: US HISTORY 800, CHEM 800, MATH II C- 740

EXCURR: Started an after school community center with my best friend ( also in my school) for kids grades 6-12, offering tutoring, sports, etc. for free–all via donations.high school students get community service credit for tutoring and coaching. Started in 2009. Over 100 kids served and over 30 volunteers. WON COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS FOR THIS

Chief Delegate MODEL UN

Head of Debate team-- won some, lost some state wide competitions

principal clarinet in Band

Play piano since six years old. Won some local prizes.Played with a local string quartet a few times. Will submit a tape of Mozart piece to adcom.

Have pretty close relationships with the teachers who are writing for me. I was a TA for one of them, ( Chemistry) who knows me really well.

WANNA GO TO BROWN. All the intellectual excitement, the opportunities to explore and travel and think out of the box and none of of the uptightness–will my Math SAT keep me out? My lack of a “Hook”?

I know its a crapshoot for anyone these days. Any suggestions? Hope?

You’re right; you have no hook, but aside from your lack of hook, I’d say you have a great shot!

(you didn’t tell us your gpa though, but I assumed it was good because your rank is 1)

Good luck! Your stats are impressive. :)

^^^ i agree with Lesley. I’m applying for 2016 too. Good luck!!

wow. You guys are great. My GPA is 4.6 weighted. Good luck ditalia! Maybe I’ll see you there, if fate is with us…good luck to everyone, and would appreciate any more opinions, especially from current students. I know how hard it is to get in, no guarantees, and everyone loves Brown…who wouldn’t? But still, any opinions or tips…

As you probably know if you have read others “can I get in” threads, those of us who have dealt with admissions for a long time will not give you a definite answer. You have a very good profile, after that it has to do with your essays, and recs. Then it is just some weird fate/admissions officers gut feeling/chance that pulls you out of the hundreds of students with similar stats. Let your essay be your best expression of who you are and why you are a good fit for Brown/vice versa; not by delineating that expressly, but in the context of something interesting to read I think is really the best. (Just my opinion, again I don’t sit in the admissions office).
And I’m not too worried about the math SAT unless you are applying expressing interest as a math/engineering etc. major. I assume you are taking calculus now or have taken?

I don’t do chances (see what BrownAlumParent said), but I wanted to comment on your standardized test scores.

I hope you appreciate just how fantastic your scores are. A 710, given your two 800s, will not be the reason for rejection at Brown, or most likely at any school in the country (with the exception of Caltech, maybe).

And I am a bit confused – you say “not stellar class rank” but then say you are 1 out of 172? How can being valedictorian not be a stellar class rank?

Hi. Thanks for the responses. First, I mean that my high school is not considered stellar, NOT my class rank. It is not one of those “top 5 schools in the country”, for example, maybe not even in the top 50. But its not a bad school, either. As far as my math, YES, I am taking BC calc, and yes, I also know that my essay matters, so I will do my best. And thank you again. These are really helpful and kind posts. I needed that.

Yup. The only thing you need to do is work on your essays =p

my friend who EDed Brown last year had 36 ACT and 3.98UW GPA and had taken 11 AP classes by the end of her senior year and got 5s on every single one of them.
was defered ED round and rejected RD round.
she ended up going to williams, which is a good school, but hella boring.

Your stats are great. I really wouldn’t be worried about the math section. (I, on the other hand, with a 720 M and looking into going into engineering…)You have some really interesting ECs and you sound like a generally cool person.
As everyone will tell you, it’s all about fit and expressing yourself well in the essays.
See you next fall hopefully!

I think you have a really great chance, but Brown is a crap shoot, you need to show personality and passion in your essays! Good luck! :)

Developing this sort of self-directed community service project is exactly the sort of thing that will impress the Brown admissions committee. Your willingness to get off the beaten track of cookie-cutter opportunities in high school shows you would be likely to strongly benefit from Brown’s open curriculum.

Make sure you write about your experience with this project in one of your essays!

Thanks again, guys. Yeah, I do know its a crapshoot to get in anywhere these days. Which is why I am nervous, just like everyone else! Good luck to all of us–we sure do need it. I must say, though, that if the people responding to me on this thread are any measure of who wants to go, or goes to Brown, I know I’ve picked the right place to apply ED… Cool people! The principal of my school is writing to the adcom about my tutoring program. Hope that helps. and Yes, LoremIpsum, am especially interested in the open curriculum. One thing I had trouble with in public high school was the conformity and repetitiveness, which I am sure most high school kids feel by 12th grade. But my school is especially rigid in this way. Also, I am now working on getting the community more involved in fund raising–not just the school and those attached to it–but the surrounding areas, and especially the businesses, maybe even corporations in the area, with the help of my fellow volunteers and school personnel. Frankly, I don’t think I can "use’ that for college since I am just starting this new attempt, but I hope to do this kind of thing at Brown, too. I really like that the campus is practically IN Providence, not safely tucked away behind high walls and forests…

I just hope I get the chance to go… I really, really hope…

Oh, and overachiever, thanks. I think 720 is a good enough score for Brown based on the stats they post. I know that’s easy for ME to say…I guess taking it again can’t really hurt, right? Hope to see you too…
