Brown College questions

Davethevaskier (9), a few more questions about Brown. Would say that the people in Brown fit the preppy mode associated with UVA? Do the girls get dressed up for class etc or are jeans and hoodies standard? Do the girls carry on about their handbags and whatnot and labels? I'm hoping Brown residents are a bit more down to earth and not so materialistic. When people say they are an artsy group does that mean they participate in theater? Or what? Are there athletes living there? Out of state, instate? Any clues you can share would be awesome. THANKS>

Clothing wise, brown has it all. I would say that there are "fewer" preppy people at brown. THeres people who wear all black to class, people who dye thier hair, people who dress nicely, people who dress in whatever they grab out of the drawers 5 minuites before class starts (not that that would be anyone i know. . .;) ) and, yes, the occasional person who considers every chance to go out a fashion event (LOL).

So i would say that "no, they don't".
I think no matter where you go, you will find people who are materialistic, same is true in brown. Brown has its cliques, and its social problems, and if i told you that everything in brown went perfectly, that would be a lie. But i think it is much less of a "uva ish" place than, say, old dorms. Definately fewer population of frat and sorority people, and most of those are pretty awsome guys and gals. There's almost always something going on on friday and saturday nites that doesn't involve drinking, cause most upperclassmen have better things to do than get smashed. So i would say "yes" to your materialistic question. I can't answer very in depth about the girls and handbags etc, because i don't know how much of that is just being a girl, and how much of that is being a "preppy girl" (I'm a guy, so i'm not a good judge of that).

"Artsy": i guess thats because most outsiders consider brown to be a place for creative and wierd people, so they assume that brownies are "artsy". Which most are, but in thier own ways. I know a lot of cognitive science people in brown, and a fair number pf physics and math people. Course, brown has its share of religious studies and english majors as well.
So no, you are not going to be living with all theatre majors. There are very few varsity atheletes in brown college. I'm not sure why this is, but it is.

I tend to think that the out of state/instate ratio is much smaller (more even) than at the rest of UVA. But again, i'm not sure of that.

You will spend your first year with 30 other first years, and 270 upperclassmen (and a very fine looking second year in Tucker ).
You will spend it with some of the most interesting people you will
ever meet, and, frankly, most have thier heads screwed on straighter than
the "typical" uva person.

IF that appeals to you, then go for it.

Hope this helps.

You can hit me up on AIM, but i'm not always available to talk very long, it being exam week and all.

brown only accepts 3o something first year students?

i'm doomed :(

those essay questions are sooo weird, am i supposed to answer them as if i were a psychic/weird genius?

one more question, where's the best dorm to pick other than brown if u want fun social life w/o getting drunk?

As always, thanks for the information. By your numbers, does that mean that there are about 90 of every other class (270) and then another 30 freshmen(oops! first years? ) So after the first year, more decide to live there?

You are not necessarily doomeed, THOM, because not many first years go for the app. After all, yall have just done a whole bunch of applications, who wants to fill out one more? What this means is that less people compete for less spots. Most people don't even realize that you can get into brown first year. So it isn't luike you will be competing against the rest of the incoming class.

On writing the app, you are supposed to be yourself. Do not try to be something you are not.

I'm not a supergood judge of the other dorms. Supposedly, new dorms has less of those kinds of people than old dorms, and i would gess that the IRC (international residential college) also has less, but i am unsure.

Bluejay: I believe that it is not evenly divided between classes, but i cannot say for sure. And i believe that it is more like brown is "limited" to 30 first years, but i'm not exactly sure how that admisions stuff goes.
