Sup CCers. I am debating between Brown, Dartmouth and Duke. I want to do entrepreneurship (or perhaps something like hedge fund management) and run for office in the future. I’ll major in some type of engineering, probably electrical engineering, with a good bit of economics as well. Any thoughts?

BOE is partially run by the Engineering dept so you might take a look at that. Even if you prefer to do full on ABET engineering, you could take some of your coursework in BOE as well. Both departments consider themselves to be interdisciplinary focused. In engineering you start with a common core and decide which major to do 2nd year, EE also has several tracks to choose from if you wish. Basically there’s a lot of flexibility for you to explore and determine the direction you want to go in.

@BrownParent what’s your opinion on brown engineering in general? Is it as good or better than Duke’s? I think I’m divided between just Brown and Duke now.

I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you because I don’t know much about either. Just read a few things here and there about Brown’s. My daughter did Computer Sciences math-cs track. She never talked about engineering dept. I can say that she got involved with a lot of research projects and that was good for grad school, but also for employers since they were good projects too. I know Engineering has that available too She wasn’t interested in wall street though she did go to a quant people recruiting event by Goldman. . She just had a great experience and a department that she really loved, and found herself well prepared for the directions she went in after. Don’t underestimate the flexibility at Brown. But I know nothing of Duke to compare, sorry. Likely you should pick based on which you like more.

I know nothing about Duke engineering. I do know that engineering at Brown has an entrepreneurial focus. One question you might ask yourself is where you want to live and work after graduation. While both Duke and Brown have national reputations, I think that Duke will be stronger in the south, Brown in the northeast.
