Brown History of Art and Architecture

Are there any current students who could provide any information on the History of Art and Architecture program at Brown? I am entering this fall as a RUE student and plan to complete a concentration in the History of Art. Any additional information beyond that on the website would be great!

Thanks!

I heard that the department is really close. A nice community.

The requirements for the concentration are really general and typical of Art History programs. Brown’s program, however, is better known for the history of architecture courses as Brown provides a wider variety of courses in this area compared to, say, lower Ivies like Dartmouth or Cornell.

I was looking over the courses offered this fall, and I noticed the department lacks general art history courses (intro to art history, art since 1945, etc) have any current students found this to be problematic, or do the courses offered provide the breadth necessary for further academic work?

I’m not a concentrator, but I’ve taken a lot of courses in the dept. In general, for the humanities, I’ve found that unless the intro courses are required, you’re better off just going right to upper level courses that you’re interested in. The professors are usually better, and you’ll learn theory as applied to one specific area instead of all of time, and I definitely prefer that.

Also, Arch 30 is a basic intro course for ancient art, and then I know there are other courses that give broad, fast intros to other periods. My experience with ARCH 30 was pretty meh, and I would never have stayed in the class except it was required. It taught me nothing that I couldn’t have learned by myself reading, or from another, more interesting course.

Some of those general courses exist but aren’t offered every semester.

How is the program in terms of contemporary art, since 1945?

I’m an Arch. Studies grad but our stuff is different than art history…

Vanel teaches a class in contemporary art, and is supposed to be very good. Here’s a link to his bio: [History of Art and Architecture at Brown University](<a href=“History of Art and Architecture | Brown University”>History of Art and Architecture | Brown University)

The other prof who gets good reviews is Neumann, who teaches architecture.

Thanks to everyone who’s provided me with some additional info-I certainly appreciate it! One more question, is it possible to register for art history classes at RISD (if they are courses not offered at Brown)? I know cross-registration exists, but I was wondering if it was primarily for visual arts classes, not liberal arts.

bump…?

You may certainly cross register for RISD classes no matter what their subject matter may be.

i heard RISD would be rly hard to get into. but a cross would be amazing
