I have just started looking into the Brown RISD dual enrollment program and it sounds absolutely amazing, however I am not sure if it is entirely right for me. I am looking to do illustration along with art history but I want to get art school instruction so I can best develop as an illustrator while having access to a university as well. I am just not sure if I would be a great candidate for the program as both of my interests are art related and it seems that that programs is looking for those who have interests in both art and a more academic course like a science or English major. Please let me know what you think and any other programs you may know of that suit my interests!
Most art schools have plenty of courses in art history. At RISD, I believe you can choose a “concentration” in art history along with your studio major. RISD students can also cross-register at Brown for a few courses if they wish. If that’s the only reason you’re looking at Brown, it may not be a great reason.
Agree with bruno.
I too think that RISD students can take Brown courses, so that would grant access. My D’s experience (a Brown student) was that it was very difficult to schedule anything at RISD because the art classes have studio time that always conflicted with her courses. Whether it’s easier for RISD students to schedule the odd class at Brown I can’t say for sure, but keep scheduling issues in mind in considering the viability of taking classes at both RISD and Brown. Good luck.
My daughter has applied to the dual-degree program… she loved it when we visited in the fall. I’m afraid her academics will be too low for Brown, but she’s trying anyway! (she has a 4.3 W/ 4.0 UW unweighted GPA, 5 AP classes, and the rest are honors… but ACT is a 30. I’m no optimist when it comes to Ivy League scores, and I know this is too low. She has lots of other schools she is applying to, but loves the thought of doing both academics and art!
Really late, but the art history classes at RISD are a joke. It’s a shame that students are required to waste time and money on these courses, rather than choosing what they want.
I am applying for the Dual Degree program, and I was wondering say I get wait-listed to Brown, but get into RISD do I not get considered at all for the dd program?
You have to,be accepted to,both schools to,be considered for the joint program. And even that’s not a guarantee of acceptance into the program.
