Brown interview FAQ and answers

I had my interview last week - I don’t remember if I posted here or not - and I had a WONDERFUL time. My interviewer knew pretty much everything I was interested in, even though she wasn’t a science/pre-med person, and did a really great job of explaining the school to me. Some questions I remember were, “Why Brown?,” “What was something that’s meaningful to you,” etc., but it was generally more conversational than questioning, if that makes sense. I felt like I got the whole 360* picture of Brown and love it, so I’m really hoping that I’ll get in.

How long did everyone’s interview last? Just curious… Mine was about two hours; time really flew by, I thought I had only been talking for one hour! :)

Mine was one hour.

FireandRain: You are just awesome.

^agreed! :)

I had my interview a few days ago, and I am starting to worry that I rambled too much. I was really nervous because I have never been in an interview, and so I am worried that it will negatively impact my admission decision. Would this put me in a bad light?

I still haven’t been contacted for an interview, and I know I’m in an area that offers them.

^Perhaps the interviewer has not received your contact information yet, or has just been too busy to contact you. It could also mean that there are relatively too many applicants for the available alumni to deal with. Don’t worry :)

^newtocollege:
check the spam section of the e-mail address that is on file with Brown as your contact e-mail. Most alums seems to start with this as the contact for interviews. Some e-mails will filter out ones sent with cc addresses and I have had that be a reason that the student didn’t get back to me. I also had a student whose e-mail forwarding to another account wasn’t doing it for all. (and I ended up calling their contact number in a foreign country to finally reach them. Not all alums would try so hard!)
But you may not have been assigned yet, or assigned to an alum who is overburdened. I would contact Brown on Monday if you haven’t heard, as I do think the interview is a great thing, and you don’t want errors to put you down as “unreachable”. If you make that effort, and there is no one to interview you, at least you will know there will be an “interested” in that item. (this is another of those categories where Brown needs to know so they don’t use an alum who doesn’t follow through repetitively).

Thanks Brownalumparent. Checked my spam and it wasn’t there. I have my login info and everything from Brown, so I know they have my email address right. I guess I’ll contact them Monday. I know a kid who has had his Brown interview here, and reading on CC I know they’re ongoing. I like interviews, and Brown is very important to me, so I’ll contact them.

Had my interview last night! It went fantastic!! I was really nervous before, especially when she arrived in full uniform( navy surgeon). But when we began talking things flowed extremely easily and we ended up talking for about an hour. We even made fun of some of the more cliche questions she had to ask like, “why brown?” and “what are your strengths and weaknesses”. It was a great time and she said if I ever wanted to talk about anything or needed help with something I could contact her! Had an excellent time! No one should be nervous

For those worried about not being contacted yet, I would give it another week before I even start thinking about it. The deadline for report form submissions is February 15, and different alums have different times when they’re busy between now and then.

My son has had these group-arranged interviews (Cornell and Columbia) where there were several interviewers talking to prospective students at the same hour, but individually and privately, and he has had individually-arranged ones (Georgetown, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Brown). He has reported no differences between the two arrangements. All have been similar sorts of questions regardless of arrangement.

My son’s Brown email invitation DID end up in his spam folder since the alum wrote from her AOL account and GMail dumps a lot of AOL email there. Fortunately, he discovered it after about a week and the alum laughed about having been reduced to spam.

I emailed about my lack of an interview and was told that not all applicants would get them, that they were randomly selected and I might not have been picked. I hope this doesn’t mean I’m not worthy, like the email someone above got about “you’re in a select group” who got interviews.

Absolutely no one is offered an interview because they are in a ‘select group’. The interviewer who suggested that was confused.

I still haven’t got any e-mails regarding my Brown interview while my classmate already had hers. This is depressing:(

Nobody was offered an interview from my area despite several applicants getting them last year. Oh well, it says that we aren’t at any disadvantage because it isn’t our faults.

and i STILL havent gotten any information on anything. I was supposed to get the info two weeks ago.

I had my interview Saturday after all. I would say that it will not act for me or against me. Pleasant enough, but I didn’t feel like I rocked her boat or anything.
