Brown location

How “in the city” is Brown? Can you hear traffic noise from campus?

Brown's up at the top of College Hill, in a really nice residential neighborhood on the east side of Providence. There are roads, so, yes, you can hear cars, but it's nothing like the constant noise you might hear in Manhattan, etc. When it's warm out, there are motorcycles up and down Thayer street, which are pretty loud and obnoxious, but for the most part, it's quieter up here than down the hill. Once you go down the hill (a five minute walk), it feels less like a "neighborhood" and more like a city, with tall buildings, big streets, etc.

The traffic noise is less like city noise than it is residential noise; the occasional car outside your window, but not loud enough to cause any distruption.

sirens on waterman all the time

Oh, I'm in Keeney, facing Brown Street. I'm across from Health Services, so I can see the EMS truck leave and arrive and such, but its never a bother.

You're much more likely to hear drunk student noise coming from Keeney quad than city noise.

The surrounding area is quite nice. Some parts of it resemble a sort of "mini-Cambridge". (MA)

From my dd via IM:
brown is right in a neighborhood
other cars drive right through all the streets
however, the neighboorhood directoly around 2 of the sides is residential, then one of the other sides is a less nice area and wicxkenden street and the water
and then the last side leads right downtown
but downtown is really down the hill and across the river

being as much in the city as we are is really a great plus
its a quick walk to all of downtown's attractions

I'm living at the bottom of Angell St. (off campus) and I get to watch cops and gangs/people fighting/random hilarious **** every night or so. It's pretty cool stuff, reminds me of New Orleans :)
Sadly, I've grown really accustomed to it and it's better entertainment than the TV. I can't sleep without the sirens.

EDIT: Wish I had a webcam, there's some stuff going on outside the window right now at 2:47. . .
