Brown or georgetown! help-- time running out!

thanks so much for everyone's input. it was a haaard decision but after thinking about it for a long time i decided on georgetown. i REALLY hope that this is the right choice for me and i hope that everyone who decided on brown 2009 has the awesomest time. thanks again =)

Best of luck to you! I'm sure you will not regret GTown.

I'm actually in the same boat you are; I definitely want to go into International Relations and I'm picking between Brown and Georgetown SFS. From all the research I have done, you cannot beat Georgetown SFS. Period. It is arguably the best learning environment in the country for IR. There is no better combination of program strength, internship availibility, and location.

However, that all said I am still choosing to go to Brown- only because I know I, personally, will be much happier there. When I visited, the environment was amazing. The students and professors alike were incredibly kind and welcoming, and I felt like I truly belonged at the school.

The four years you spend in college will determine who you are, and you really have to choose the school that makes you happy and disregard all the other factors. Sure, Brown is really expensive, REALLY cold (I'm from Southern California; for me, 65 degrees is "freezing"), far away, and probably not as strong in the IR department as Georgetown SFS. But it makes me happy, and that's so much more important.

BTW, I know what you mean by it having a lesser asian population: I myself am asian, and I'm definitely seeking to get away from the "asian brotherhood" experience that I've gotten for many years in HS. I assure you that Brown is a good place to break away from that experience.

Woohoo! It seems like the IR program at Brown is going to be pretty cool for the Class of 2009. I just officially sent my "yes" card in today to Brown over Georgetown SFS as well, for about exactly the same reasons as you (except the weather thing; I grew up in Minnesota and Washington State, and for the last few years India, which has only made me appreciate cold weather more). Congrats!

Wow has everyone been in the same situation?

Again, I chose Brown over Georgetown.. Didnt get a chance to visit either of them, but my sister was at Brown and she loved it...

Guess ill find out just how good a decision it was when i get there, but either way you cant go wrong.. both are great schools..

I too am now considering Brown over Georgetown SFS for transfer for the class of 2008. I am currently studying international relations and security studies at the best departement in the U.K.(and Europe) so know that I have a much better perspective on the different programs at various schools. While SFS is better than Brown for IR, it is only better if you know that you want to 1. Work in public service or 2. Work for a company like Price Waterhouse Cooper 3. Academic study of IR (less so for this one) 4. Work for a group like Brookings or other think tanks or NGO's.
I don't care what other high school seniors or worse kid's parents have to say about this. I have spoken with professors here, at SFS, and with recruiters, and if you don't fit into one of those four catigories a BSFS is a waste of a higher education and you will find yourself in a hard spot. Unless you are like Bill Clinton who said beofre applying to SFS that "I want to be president" (its documented by him) go to Brown and get a more broad education.
