Brown or McGill?

I see, this is true, a lot of people I talk to HK have never heard of Brown...there are many international students at Brown?? or just not as many as at Mcgill??

Asians have only heard of Harvard and MIT. (At least my grandparents, and just about every Asian adult outside of the US I know.)

As far as I can tell, living at an international school, international students see Canada as a place to go if they didn't get into the U.S. Most just see the whole country as secondary. So whereas there may be many international students at McGill, in my experience, they go because it's cheaper than paying full at American schools and pretty good (they may realize once they get there that it's just as good, if not better, than most top-rated American schools, but they don't go there with that belief).

haha...so true, I go to an international school...last year someone who didnt meet his Oxford offer went to Mcgill...where do u go to international school?

for me, McGill was just a back up, just in case I didn't get to any Ivies in the US or I had not enough financial aid.
McGill is a great university, but nothing can really quite compare to the undergrad education in an ivy. With all the funds pouring in etc, you don't get that from McGill, being a state school etc.

In my school (intl school of geneva) Mcgill used by far the most popular university for people who are in the top 10-20% on the class (about 10 people went last year and even more the yr before that)

Dont know that happened this year...it seems like I am the only one (dont think many people got in..its getting really competative as of late)

I'm currently an international student at Brown, and am clearly biased, but I just wanted to add my thoughts. In my view, while McGill is an awesome school in a wonderful city, I don't think it can quite compete with the opportunities (both over the course of your education, and afterwards) offered by Brown. While it's true that the man on the street in Asia might not have heard of Brown, it's generally the case that the people who are doing the hiring will have. And, although general prestige seems less important to me, if you want academic recognition from other people, just casually mention that it's ivy league. As far as snobbishness at Brown goes, that's really, really not a concern.

A bigger concern for me would be that McGill doesn't offer your prospective major. While PoliSci overlaps a great deal with IR, the whole point of IR is its interdisciplinary and flexible nature. Brown has a wonderful, and very popular IR program that offers lots of opportunities for undergrad involvement (in my eyes, undergrad focus is another reason I would prefer Brown); you can visit it on the web at www.watsoninstitute.org.

The only real reason I would pick McGill over Brown would be price. How much cheaper is one than the other for you? Is Brown within the realm of affordability?

Ok, I've said my piece; and while I'm biased, both are fine schools. Good luck with your decision!

Oh man...Thanks a lot everybody. I have to decide today (I go to an international school, well, not exactly an international school, a United World College, in India, by the way), and given that most people I've heard from even at McGill say to go to Brown, despite the lack of diversity and beautiful city, I think I'll be going to Brown. Of course, I still haven't sent my things in so...we'll see. Thanks for all the good advice and even if I do get up the guts to enroll in Brown (in the next few hours), I'll visit McGill every once in a while for MUN and stuff.

Great! Keep us posted!

Did you go to SSUNS? And congratulations on your decision!

what's SSUNS?

Secondary Schools United Nations Symposium. I think McGill runs it. It's huge. And very fun.

Wow cool. No, unfortunately the only things we have out here are things we arrange with the few schools around or in Bombay. But I hope I get to do that stuff next year, being about 100 kilometers from 90 schools haha.

Ah, cool. Yeah, I might do MUN in college. I had a chair from Brown at my last conference actually.

Do you go to the U of Chicago MUN?

are you from Mahindra? ahaha hello fellow UWC student :)

no way! dalliance, which uwc are you from? small world. by the way, as a testimony to my indecision, i just got an extension from georgetown and still have today to decide where i want to go. it's hell.
