Hey everyone! I was wondering if I could get some input on what you all think!
I was accepted to Rice, Brown, and Duke. I don’t think Duke is the BEST fit for me, and I’m completely at a loss for Rice/Brown. Does anyone have any insight?

Well what are you looking for in a college?

A great quality of life, great academics, friendly people, good weather, a lot of gay students, prestige…omg the list goes on! that’s the best i can think of right now. Honestly, I feel like i would LOVE both rice and brown

Wow, I have the exact same decision to make!

visit visit visit :)

(that said, go to Brown )

Duke’s in a weird place (NC, like really? 3 hrs from the beach)? I have friends who go there and love it, but I definitely based all my college decisions off location (:

I hated Houston when I saw it too. I saw the city part of it and a lot of hobos (not to be mean) who were like really creepy at night. I know people like those 2 schools, but I think location means a lot.

Those are my 2 cents, good luck^^

^ Mj! Really? That’s so weird :)

And yeah haha, I think I’ve eliminated Duke. But argh! This is gonna be a toughie. I will visit both =)

Is this a joke… Go to brown. I insist. Congrats!

No, there are some reasons why you might pick Rice. Like if you don’t enjoy choosing all your classes. Or if you’re really research focused, and they have the exact researcher you want to work with. Or you literally cannot survive sub-freezing temperatures.

That being said, I’d (obviously) say Brown, because we’re a better all-around school for undergrads. But visit both, then figure out where you belong.

I got into all those schools too! If I wasn’t accepted at MIT I would be making the exact same decision! And I’d definitely say Brown. I know people at all these places and everyone I know at Brown loves it! Rice is also an amazing place and has a great quality of life… But the HEAT. Go to Providence! The beach, right in New England, 45 minutes from Boston, and a really well regarded school in a fun environment.
Best of luck in your decision!

Don’t go to Brown! I’m on the waiting list, so the less people that choose it the better. I think you would be a great fit at Rice.

I know next to nothing about Brown, but I’m from Houston and went to Duke. I LOVED Duke, but if you visited and feel that it wasn’t a great fit, there’s probably something to that. If, on the other hand, you haven’t visited but think it won’t be a good fit because it’s in the South and has a fratty rep, go visit, stay overnight with a student, and see what you think for yourself. There’s definitely a contingent of fratty jerks at Duke, but they are definitely in the minority. You’ll meet all kinds of people there, and all kinds of people find that Duke is a great fit for them. And even though Duke is in the South, it’s really not a southern school.

Rice is also a great school, and everyone I know who’s gone there has loved it. People who’ve never been to Houston or haven’t spent any time there tend to scoff at the idea of it, but most people who live there love it. If you’re looking for warm weather, Houston blows both Durham and Providence out of the water. Expect to be in shorts by the middle of February. Like any big city, Houston does have its sketchy neighborhoods, but the neighborhood that Rice is in is really, really nice. Plus, Rice Village, which is right next to campus, has great shopping, restaurants and bars. It’s definitely much, much nicer than 9th street at Duke.

Academically, I’d say they’re all about equal, but Duke and Brown will probably get slightly more name recognition.

Thank you everyone! I can’t afford Duke so it’s pretty much not a consideration anymore. I live near Stanford, so I’ve never experienced sub-30…and I have trouble handling 40 and below. My ideal weather is 85-95…Haha, so I don’t know how much emphasis I want to put on weather, but Rice blows it out of the water for me.

In my opinion, I would choose Rice over Brown. Both schools are great but Rice is truly amazing. The people there, the research environment and the learning that takes place is world class. Not to say that Brown does not possess these too but if you are looking for a great education and good research prospects then Rice would be the way to go.

Even from a Grad school perspective, Rice would give you better prospects straight after undergrad. The brilliant weather at Rice adds to the fun of it all.

So, i’d say stick to Rice.

^Totally confused by the last post.^

How does Rice provide learning and research prospects that Brown does not? Do you even know what prospects for research and grad school Brown provides?

If you can’t decide go to Rice because there are people who would give their left foot to go to Brown in your place.

Well if all you care about is the weather, why did you apply to Brown anyway?

I wd visit the 2 of them if at all possible. That’s a great choice to be blessed with.

^^Check out manfromtheOC’s other posts – he’s a (new) ■■■■■.

Oooh. I see now that in every ____ vs. Brown he says ____. With only six posts I wouldn’t be surprised if he posts another another username and was waitlisted from Brown just trying to open up a spot for himself.

^ Yup – such was my guess in the Brown v Pomona thread.
