Brown student taking questions!

Well the brown students that I see around here don't jump around yelling "Go Bears" or whatever they are and probably don't pack sporting events, but all of them are fond of their school...that I know is fact.

I've stayed at the Radisson and the Biltmore but now have Parent's weekend reservations in Sekonk. The rates are LOW and it is only 12-15 minutes from campus. No fee for parking. I have friends who have done this in past years and it is really just as accessible as downtown Providence and much less expensive. Advantage with the Radisson is that they have a free shuttle van which will take you to campus, to shop, to restaurants and this eliminates the hassle of driving. There is so little parking at Brown and the city is so very quick with their $30 parking tickets. BTW I loved the rooms at the Biltmore, old hotel but beautiful new furnishings and enormous rooms- bedroom with a separate sitting room.

This is a stupid question

How do Brown students typically dress? Preppy or casual logo sweatshirt ordeal? Thanks

They dress how they want, some look like they're on Fifth Avenue, not in class at 9am, some look like they havent showered in weeks like any other school.

There are no guards parading our halls, no one knocking on your door to see what is going on (barring noise complaints past 2 am and event hen they just tell you to quiet down). Sleep where you want with who you want, stay out as long nd as late as you want. Brown is higher education institution who enrolls adults as studnets, and they treat you as such.

is soverign bank generally the most popular choice for students.. im trying to get my bank account stuff settled soon

How hard is it to transfer into Brown? What are the factors considered?

Bank of America is more convenient I think but only by a hair or two.

jraven, espeically away from campus you can really tell how fond students are of Brown. I've had alums, excited to learn that I attend their alma mater, come up to me and start reminiscing about their time at Brown to the point where people mistake us for old friends.

Audi, we stay at the Radisson Hotel Providence Harbor. The two factors we cared about were the expense and the convenience/proximity. We spend no time at the actual hotel and for the purposes of moving our kid in or even parent weekend, we don't care about having a "nice" hotel but just nice enough to have a convenient place to stay. And yes, it is definitely clean. This hotel is one mile from campus....basically down a street and over a street. It is not in the downtown area of Providence, no city traffic. There is free parking. They have a restaurant with a full breakfast which is convenient. Many Brown parents seemed to be there when we were. It is a basic hotel and nice enough in our opinion, just not overly nice but plenty good for a basic hotel which is all we wanted, nothing luxurious. This wasn't a vacation but just a place to stay and it all adds up. I've stayed there about four times so far and will likely in the future. The drive between the hotel and campus is just on residential streets, not in a downtown area, but yet, just as close to campus. Excellent price usually.

You could take a longshot and look at the Brown U. Inn which is on Charlesfield right on campus

I know there is a Bed Bath and Beyond near campus (Providence Place Mall), but is there a BJ's or a Costco or Sam's Club or anything similar close by too? I'm looking for some place I might be able to buy food items in bulk just in case I realize on move-in-day I forgot something.

Try Seekonk, Mass but some students do provide such a service at a cost too

Soozie-thanks for the tip. I had booked a room at the Marriott and it was $229/night and they charged for parking. I just booked a room at the Radisson and it was $189/night, free parking and a shuttle to the campus. I don't expect to spend much time in the hotel-just wanted a clean and convenient one and this sounds like it fits the bill. Thanks for the info.

Audi, glad that worked out. Honestly, when I have stayed at the Radisson, it has cost quite a bit less than you mentioned, but maybe it's just the date, dunno. Book now for Parents Weekend and see what you can get. Just know that this hotel is even lower cost than that on many dates.

That is the price for Parents Weekend. The lowest price offered was $179 and you had to pay now and there was no refund. The additional $10 at $189 a night let me cancel up to 6 PM the day I am supposed to arrive-so we thought it was worth it just in case something happens that causes us to change our plans. I am sure the rates are lower at other times of the year, but they know when there is a need-Parents Weekend, Move in Day, Graduation and they raise the rates dramatically when that happens. But thanks, I am glad to be charged even less than the Marriott rates-any bit of savings is still a savings!

Hi, I was just wondering if there was a macintosh vs pc advantage, specifically for engineering students, if anyone knows... im leaning towards a mac but i dont want to get it if its bad for engineering... thanks!

my friend is an engineer with a mac and he had some serious problems installing software this past year.. apparently matlab and other programs were designed for PC and didnt install properly on his mac. Of course you can always use PCs in the computer clusters if you own a mac

AAAH! where are the actual forms?!
I went to the brown website, and it said, reviewing 07-08 application...
which means that they have the 06-07 application
but I can't find it!
oh please, somebody help me...

okay, so, apparently, you have to email them and request a form or something? where or how do I do that?

Chill. Damn.

Firstly, to those answering questions about Brown, I throughly enjoyed visiting your campus, and if you know a rising junior named Chase, thank him for the tour I received. :)

A couple questions:
1. What sort of theatre clubs, separate from majors do you have? All I know of is your pirate acapella group.
2. Is the student body accepting of those with special needs?
3. If anyone is in the English department, do you guys have a creative writing or poetry major that you can select?
