First of all, I’m a High School Sophomore, but I must say I am quite sick of it and I dream about Brown daily :). Well a few questions:

I’m an African-American male, 3.667 GPA, all Honors classes, going to take all AP/Honors next year, all As except for a C in Math. I also started a Music Club at school, and am Secretary of another club. I also plan to do lots of environment work. I also got a 1560 on my PSAT (first try). Think I have a good chance of getting in?

I live in a single parent household, and my mom makes around $40,000/year. If accepted, would everything be free or would I have to do work study or anything?

Do you know anyone in Environmental House? I heard about it, and I fell in love. But I strongly dislike drugs and alcohol (not religious reasons, personal preference). I also get huge migranes if I’m trying to sleep and people are talking loudly/invade my personal space at night. I’m not the most social guy in the world, but I like having close friends. Should I go for West House or opt out for Quiet Hall or Substance-Free housing?

I’m signing up for lots of free programs in which you travel the world, educational trips. Would that look better on my app?

How’s it like in the summer and winter? Being that I live in California, I’m not used to frigid winters, but I’ve been to Atlanta before and survived a day of below-freezing temperatures (insanely cold, but I think I could get used to it!). And are the summers like really hot? Or do the days vary?

How are the Urban Studies programs at Brown?
Any help would be very appreciated. I can’t wait to get this high school nightmare over with!

you have a shot but nobody can give you an exact prediction

yes, brown would be free

Urban Studies Program

"2. yes, brown would be free"

That's not necessarily true. They will take into account the noncustodial parent's income if the parent still has contact with the student. If the parent doesn't they usually want good explanations and whatnot. So if you still talk to your dad you need to go ahead and add his income and assets to the total.

"a day of below-freezing temperatures (insanely cold, but I think I could get used to it!)"

That is hilarious! One day! There are other Cali people here so it must be bearable.

Yes I still talk to my dad. The cutoff is $100,000 right? Collectively, they both make less than that. So I'd still be in the clear?

It still wouldn't be completely free but cheaper.

Cool, another sophomore like me who wants to go to Brown. :D

tetrisfan, where are you located? A year from now, let's see who gets in :). December 1st, 2009 (Early Decision, that is). Mark the calendars!

I am also a sophomore that wants to attend Brown. I live in New Jersey baby!

Also, Obstinate on your original post with questions number 5. How do sign up for these programs? As in where are these programs located?

You mean the educational trips? There's a forum called Summer Programs on here, there's alot of programs in there. And Fastweb.com

Hey. I live in India! :D

Isn't it December 15th, 2009? ;)

Ah, I believe so :(. Either way I can't wait!

Lol ya same here. I really really want to get in.

Is the PSAT out of two or three sections?

the PSAT has 3 sections

Hey, it's okay to think about college as a sophomore, but remember that high-school isn't simply a stepping stone to college. It's a time for you to grow. It's a time for you to spend time near your parents, conversing over a dinner table with your parents on a daily basis.

The times really don't last. I hope you aren't too sick of being in high-school. After all, all this college-thinking might get you into a obsessive rut. In any case, good luck getting accepted in ... two years or so.

In any case, I think it would be a good idea to come back to this post when you're a senior in high-school. I'm sure you will have become a very different person, full of more interesting ideas and ambitions.

Definitely. I wouldn't say quite simply that I am sick of high school as a whole, more like I'm a bit tired of the normal day-to-day garbage that most kids my age wrap their lives up completely in, and I'm looking for something that's a little more challenging, exciting, and most of all, really fun, and makes a difference. To put it simple, I've got a lot of empty time left to go, lots of empty friendships that will come and go, lots of mindless class projects for the grade, lots of day by day learning, and it'd be good to fill it with something :).

Hey, it's great that you know where you want to be for college, just don't let it take over your life- I went into a funk between when I was accepted ED and when I finally arrived at Brown, and it kind of ruined senior year.
Environmental House (West House) seems to be pretty chill place to live. A few of my friends were going to apply to live there. But as a freshman, you can't live in the program houses, and you are assigned to a dorm unless you request substance-free. Substance-free is normally only 1 floor of a larger dorm, so even that might not be really quiet- just invest in a pair of noise canceling headphones if it gets too loud.

None of the dorms have AC, so at the beginning of the school year it was pretty hot- a fan next to the window helps big time, though. As a Floridian, I thought I wouldn't survive the winter, but you get used to it over time.

Good luck and try to enjoy the rest of high school.

Yeah I know what you mean. I think I'm hitting that funk already. High school just seems so terrible. The people, the social life, everything except the teahcers. And Brown's so awesome!!!!

Aww man I thought I could sign up Freshman year. Aside from Substance Free, how else could I get a different type of dorm than everyone else?

Hey, back to the OP
I'm not too knowledgeable about Brown, but I do live 1/2 an hour away, so I can tell you about the weather.

This winter, we've had about 3 big snow storms--Providence had a bit more than where I live. The winters can be cold sometimes, but really, the temp changes so much. It can be very cold, but it never seems to snow when its cold enough and oftentimes every time it precipitates, its too warm to snow, so it rains and it really just turns out to be disgusting--like this past weekend. But you also get beautiful days, like today that are really sunny and stuff. Wow I don't think this makes much sense, but would you believe its 9:00 and I'm exhausted...
