Brown student taking questions!

That's probably a pretty fair explanation, as I've never really known ANYONE to smoke (in public, at least) at either of my high schools. That's what nice wooded areas (hello, brush fires) are for, in their minds. Probably doesn't hurt that smoking is not allowed on school property.

Oh, the terrible realities of higher education!
@__@

We had a good 20 people out across the street from the senior parking lot at all times smoking at my HS (of about 1200-1300) so seeing one or two people walking around with a cigarette never phased me.

Ive seen comparatively less smoking at Brown then most other places in fact.. I dont think I know anyone who really smokes, at least not regularly..

People prefer to smoke pot, and thats only occasionally..

In my dorm of 64 last year, there was one kid who regularly chain smoked outside the door (grooooss) and then maybe two or three kids who smoked cigarettes occasionally. Other than that, all the smoke in our dorm was from pot.

In my unit of almost 86 (second largest unit on campus), 1 person smoked regularly, one person would have a cigarette outside while drunk. The rest was pot.

Well, I had a cold at the time, so I couldn't have known for sure, but I'm pretty sure that people weren't smoking pot outside as much as there were smokers. It seems like it was probably just a relatively larger smoking population than I'm used to seeing, which is I guess... relatively promising. ??? Who knows.

True... well, pot is technically illegal... so people don't tend to smoke it outside except on 4/20.

What are the layouts of the dorms like...by this question I mean singles? doubles? 2 room doubles? stuff like that...

There are a ton of arrangements for upper classman, but it's all one room doubles for freshman with VERY VERY few exceptions that mostly occur due to medical issues.

tangentially related question:
Who makes all this ugly dorm room furniture for colleges? it's the same practically everywhere, it seems, and it's hideous. I need to know to whom to address my hate mail...

:|

It's already been stated that the only "bad" thing about Brown is the dorms, but in reality, are they manageable? Like is there enough workspace, can you do enough w. the room to liven it up..etc. etc.

Yeah, there's no freshman dorm that's horrible. Brown's dorms are only "bad" compared to the palaces at Harvard and Yale.

There's a lot of variability in room size for freshmen, but even the smallest dorms are livable if you get along with your roommate.

I don't know who stated that the dorms are the bad part of Brown. In fact, I'd probably have one or two other complaints first for sure. The dorms are more than managable and quite fine. It's just something that is not hard to see improving, though it would cost a TREMENDOUS amount of money and it's also something that was mismanaged in Brown's past.

I wouldn't say the dorms are a reason not to come to Brown, they're pretty typical middle-ranged dorms.

so what are the one or two other complaints you would have modestmelody¿¿ =P

Yes, I was curious too, and the dorms at Yale are not all palaces - yes, the residential colleges have a lot of character and extra facilities, but some freshman dorm rooms are very small with metal bunk beds.

I'm a rising senior so I know it won't matter if I don't make it to Brown, but are the dorms air-conditioned? Also, do people seriously smoke indoors? Because I might have a lot of trouble tolerating smoke, especially if my roommate smokes : /

km., like just about every other school in the North at elast, there is absolutely no AC in the dorms, which only sucks for about 6 weeks of the year anyway. I don't know anyone who smoked cigarettes indoors although on the weekends Keeney defintiely smelled a bit like pot and alcohol.

Nope, the dorms aren't air conditioned. I don't think most colleges have air conditioned dorms (well, maybe they do in warmer climates, but not in the midwest or northeast).

People don't smoke cigarettes indoors because a. it's against school rules which are actually enforced and b. it's legal to smoke them outside. However, since pot is technically illegal, people do smoke pot indoors. Just put on your roommate form that you do not want smoke of any kind. If your roommate ends up being a smoker (of whatever substance) you can request a room change or ask for help from your counselor.

Thanks modestmelody and Ilovebrown; that was really helpful!

Kemo, any other complaints I have are somewhat specific to situations myself or friends were and are in and are also all very minor. If you'd like to discuss them in detail anyway, feel free to IM me.

Some of my feelings are actually impossible to impliment and would be quite widely ridiculed on this board most likely. One in particular comes to mind.
